The college football season has kicked off, and Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel breaks down 24 top games to watch.
It’s a rematch of the 2010 BCS National Championship Game as Auburn looks to earn two consecutive wins over Oregon. The last time the teams met, the Tigers featured Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. This time around, the Ducks have Heisman contender Justin Herbert at quarterback.
Florida State, led by head coach Willie Taggart, clearly wants to move on from its disappointing performance last season. What better way to do that than a win over Boise State? The Seminoles have lost two consecutive season openers. FSU enters a season unranked for the first time since 2008, giving the 'Noles much to prove.
Football fans get their first look at former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts in an Oklahoma uniform as the Sooners host first-year Houston coach Dana Holgorsen and the Cougars. Holgorsen spent eight seasons in charge at West Virginia, but he was winless (0-7) against the Sooners.
New Louisville coach Scott Satterfield faces a monumental challenge in his first game as the Cardinals host Notre Dame for the first time in school history. The Irish are coming off their first appearance in the College Football Playoff and are opening up a season on the road for the first time since 2016.
A win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl has helped put Texas football back on the national map, but coach Tom Herman's Longhorns can push that narrative one step further with a win over an LSU team that is sure to start next season ranked in the top 10.
Head coach Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers enter the season riding a 15-game home win streak, with the last loss at Memorial Stadium against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, 2016. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher has struggled to beat the Tigers on their home field, going 1-3 on the road when he was coach at Florida State.
Houston coach Dana Holgorsen helped Mike Leach develop high-powered offenses during their time together at Iowa Wesleyan and Texas Tech. They face off now while leading programs eager to make early statements in the race for College Football Playoff semifinal spots.
It’s been nearly three years since Central Florida last lost a home game, but the Knights will be tested when they host Stanford in mid-September. The last time these two programs hooked up, the Cardinal walked away with a 31-7 win in 2015.
During an early contest between two traditional powers, Notre Dame will make its first trip to Sanford Stadium to take on coach Kirby Smart's Bulldogs between the hedges. Georgia is undefeated (2-0) against the Fighting Irish, including a 20-19 win at Notre Dame Stadium in 2017.
The latest edition of the Red River Showdown is a rematch of last season’s Big 12 championship game, during which Oklahoma knocked off Texas for its fourth consecutive conference title. This could be a preview of the title game, with the Sooners favored to win the Big 12.
There’s bad blood between these two programs dating back to the 2016 postponement of their game in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Last season, Florida added fuel to the fire when it scheduled LSU as its homecoming weekend opponent. Both teams are pushing for a surprise spot in the SEC title game.
Oregon has won 13 out of the past 15 meetings in this series, but don’t let that fool you. The Oregon-Washington series has developed into quite a rivalry. The winner of this game could clinch the Pac-12 North crown.
Michigan is looking to snap a two-game losing streak against rival Notre Dame. The Wolverines have won four consecutive home contests in this series, with the last Fighting Irish win coming in 2005.
The winner in the Georgia-Florida rivalry series has gone on to represent the East Division in the SEC Championship Game six out of the past eight years. Georgia has won two straight in this series, with each of the last five games decided by an average of 22 points per game.
Despite their respective ups and downs, this rivalry series between Miami and Florida State always manages to keep its fans on the edge of their seats. The past five meetings have been decided by a combined 15 points, including Miami’s epic 21-point second-half comeback for a one-point victory over the Seminoles.
After winning nine of 12 meetings in the early 2000s, the magic has faded for LSU, which has lost eight straight games to Alabama. Even more disappointing, the Tigers have been shut out during two of the past three losses and out-scored 63-10 during that stretch.
Washington has won six consecutive Apple Cup matchups and nine of the last 10 meetings against rival Washington State. Last year’s win by the Huskies denied the Cougars their first chance at a conference championship since 2002 and sent Chris Petersen’s team to its second title in the past three seasons.
Alabama has won four of the past five Iron Bowl matchups, including last year’s 52-21 victory over Auburn. The last time the Crimson Tide traveled to The Plains, the Tigers handed them a 26-14 upset loss, denying ‘Bama a shot at five straight SEC Championship Game appearances.
Florida snapped a five-game losing streak to FSU last season and in the process denied the Seminoles bowl eligibility for the first time since 1982. The last time the Gators won back-to-back games against the ‘Noles was 2008-09 when Urban Meyer was the coach at Florida.
Michigan is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak to Ohio State when the Wolverines host the Buckeyes during Thanksgiving weekend. Urban Meyer’s retirement is good news for Jim Harbaugh, who has lost four games to Ohio State since he took over the Michigan program in 2015.
Without a conference championship game, this regular-season finale could be Notre Dame’s best chance to impress the College Football Playoff selection committee. The Irish have struggled on the road against the Cardinal, going 3-7 during the past 10 meetings. Their most recent road win was in 2007.
Oklahoma has won 16 of the past 20 games in the Bedlam Series, including eight out of the last 10 contests at Oklahoma State. However, the Sooners were pushed to the limit last season when the defense had to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute to secure a win.
It will be hard to live up to last season’s seven-overtime game, during which Texas A&M outlasted LSU. The contest spanned nearly five hours and set an NCAA record for the most points scored in a game with 146 combined. Tigers fans won’t easily forget a perceived blown call that cost their team a win.
The pageantry and prestige surrounding the Army-Navy game makes it one of the highlights of each college football season. Army is looking to win four straight in this series for the first time since 1993-96. The past 10 games in this series have been decided by an average of 7.5 points per game.
