Charles K. Kulas, 71, known to his friends as “Chuck,” passed away Friday, May 10, 2019, after a brief illness.
Chuck will be dearly missed by his family and his many kind and loyal friends. Chuck was born Dec. 2, 1947, in Winona. He attended Cotter High School in Winona, graduating in 1966. He then received his bachelor’s degree at St. Mary’s University, before attending the University of Minnesota Law School. He worked the majority of his career as a pension attorney, most of those years at Northwestern Mutual Life and Minnesota Life. He was married to Stephanie Knopick in 1969. They were later divorced. Chuck loved all sports, but especially loved playing fast pitch softball. Many of his friends were longtime teammates. They traveled and competed in multiple state and national tournaments. He was a terrific catcher. The teams he played on became family to him. He also enjoyed golf and international travel. Chuck visited all but three major league ball parks in the U.S. He also traveled to China, Australia and Eastern Europe. Chuck was an avid Gophers, Twins and Packers fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Eleanor Kulas; and a sister, Sharon. He is survived by his sister, Mary Lou (Roy) Hazelton; nephew, Chris (Jennifer) Hazelton; niece, Holly (Dan) Lecheler; and grandnieces and nephew Jessica, Paige and Morgan Hazelton and Tegan and Drew Lecheler.
