SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Hubert L. Hunzeker, 98, of Spring Grove died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at the Gundersen Tweeten Care Center. He was born in Peru, Neb., Nov. 12, 1920, to Clyde and Lily (Branek) Hunzeker.

Hubert’s distinguished life included serving as a U.S. Navy officer on an attack transport in both the Atlantic and Pacific, during World War II. He went on to teach, earning multiple college degrees culminating in a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1960. He was a professor and math dept. head at the University of Omaha and later at Michigan Technological University. When he retired, he and his family moved to Onalaska. He was an active member of La Crescent United Methodist Church and continued to teach, not about math, but his deep faith in Jesus Christ and love for the Scriptures. Hubert was also a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.

Hubert is survived by daughters, Mary Hunzeker, Lisa (Henry) Wiens and Electra Rich; son, James (Darla) Hunzeker; grandchildren, Jessica (Christopher) Strinmoen, Travis (Stefanie) Hunzeker, Tyler (Ashley) Hunzeker, Kyle (Ali) Hunzeker, Lora (Cathy) Wiens, Stephanie Wiens Noyes, Joanna (Gavin) Deming, Carolyn (Jonathan) Kuhfuss and Jude Rich; stepdaughter, Judy Kerska; stepgrandsons, Eric (Tina) Kerska and Marc (Elizabeth) Kerska; numerous great-grandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Hubert was preceded in death by his son, Peter Hunzeker; first wife, Gloria D. Hunzeker (married 1943-1989); and by Dorothy J. Olson (married 1992 to 2014); also by his brothers, Clyde and Lorain and sister, Emma Hunzeker.

The pre-service burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the La Crescent United Methodist Church, Pastor Aaron Justice officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at La Crescent Methodist Church.

The Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services assisted with arrangements. Online guestbook is available at www.schumacher-kish.com. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be given to the La Crescent United Methodists Church.
