CenturyTel's formation began in 1930 when William Clarke and Marie Williams purchased the Oak Ridge Telephone Company in Oak Ridge, Louisiana. The Williams' son, Clarke, now Chairman of the Board, assumed management of the fledgling company after returning from World War II in 1946.

By 1968, after building and shaping his businesses into profitable, good-service companies, Clarke had expanded the family business into a tri-state company serving 10,000 access lines. That year, the company was incorporated under the name Central Telephone and Electronics, and Clarke M. Williams was named President and Chairman of the Board. The company was renamed Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc., in 1971.

Benefits CenturyTel offers a full benefit package including medical, dental, short and long term disability, life, dependent life, accidental death and dismemberment, 401k retirement plan, paid time off, education reimbursement and flexible spending accounts.
