GRAND MEADOW, Minn. - Quarterback Caleb Leitchnam and running back Michael Gehling combined for 221 of the Grand Meadow High School football team's 262 rushing yards Friday in a 35-7 MSHSL Class Nine-Man sectional championship win over Houston.

While the Superlarks (10-1) had their way on the ground against the Hurricanes (8-3), their defense allowed just 172 total yards and a second-quarter touchdown.

"They have three solid guys who run the ball," Houston coach Ryan Gatzlaff said. "They're definitely dangerous running from boht the quarterback spot and the running back spot."

Gehling gave Grand Meadow a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before the defending state champion Hurricanes took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass from Dustin Uhlendorf to Tye Carrier, plus Nick Henderson's PAT kick.

But that was all for Houston. Leitchnam hit Gehling for a 28-yard pass late in the second quarter and the Superlarks took a 14-7 lead and momentum into halftime.

"That was a big play at the end of the half," Gatzlaff said.

Gehling added touchdown runs of 14 and 30 yards and Leitchman finished off the scoring with a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

"We had to go for it on fourth down toward the end and that gave them a short field a few times, so the score was kind of deceptive," Gatzlaff said.

Houston went 14-0 in 2008 en route to the state title, giving the Hurricanes a 22-3 record over the past two seasons.

"The seniors on this year's team accomplished a lot and have had quite a career," Gatzlaff said.

Sonny Isenhuth rushed for 30 yards for Houston and Troy Sires and Uhlendorf combined for 110 passing yards.
