(2008/12/02) Winona's Beyond Tough Guise Project is an attempt to begin moving our community beyond traditional, destructive visions of masculinity. The "Tough Guise" describes the way men and boys have learned to show the world only those parts of themselves that they have been taught are manly -- to be tough, strong, physical, in control... Violence is portrayed as being part and parcel of being a man, as an accepted means of demonstrating toughness and exerting control over others.
(2008/12/02) Purpose: These characteristics, created by Winona's BEYOND TOUGH GUISE PROJECT, form the basis for improving attitudes and behaviors of men and boys. A sense of purpose and optimism is the foundation of this positive vision of masculinity. By community members living these characteristics and institutions supporting these norms, we will reduce violence and create an atmosphere that supports growth for all. We appreciate and encourage all comments and suggestions for modifying and implementing these characteristics.

TJ is in eighth grade, has good grades, and is possibly the most polite young man you could ever meet. This very tall teen ager always uses his manners, and always tells the truth. That may sound like the kind of kid who has no friends at school, or is a teacher’s pet. That could not be furd1er from the truth. He is an asset on the basketball and football team; he is very popular and well known in the school for his positive attitude.
