Karlan Poling, a 2008 graduate of Winona Senior High School, will study this fall on a National Merit Scholarship, guaranteed for four years, at the University of Chicago. Poling also was named a University Scholar and will receive another $10,000 scholarship guaranteed for four years.

Smokers at Winona State University, beware. Like bars and restaurants in Minnesota, the Winona campus will become smoke-free in the 2008-09 school year. The university announced Monday it plans to ban the use of tobacco products on its campus starting Jan. 12. The ban will prohibit smoking in all WSU public places and athletic fields at both its central and west Winona campuses.

More than 40 students and six instructors participated in the fourth annual Dixieland Jazz Workshop on July 11-12 at the Performing Arts Center at Winona State University.
