(2008/04/13) The Winona City Council’s decision on Monday night to reject plans for a new apartment complex n ostensibly privately owned student housing — is more than a little perplexing.
(2008/04/12) Anyone who has ever had a dog has done the old fetching trick. You know, that trick you play on man’s best friend where you show the dog a ball and then fake a throw, only to have the unsuspecting canine chase what turns out to be thin air.
(2008/04/11) Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s decision to ax more than $200 million from the bonding bill Monday was an example of the good, bad and ugly of Minnesota politics.
(2008/04/09) How often have we heard that old cliché about the wheels of justice turning slowly? Or even grinding to a near-halt?
(2008/04/01) The third time was a charm. In one of the most impressive comebacks in NCAA Division II basketball history, Winona State University rallied from as many as 15 points behind Augusta State University to seize the national championship. It was the third trip to Springfield, Mass., for a championship game in as many years.
(2008/03/30) You can parade tractors downtown every day, but beyond the confusion of a John Deere cruising Main Street, the point may be lost on the average Winona citizen.
(2008/03/29) Certain things shouldn’t be left up to “Minnesota nice.”
(2008/03/25) Few places love their history as much as Winona loves its. In fact, Winona loves its history to death.
(2008/03/22) It would take a lot more that $550,000 to make the Minnesota Department of Transportation look good. Especially after it was revealed that more than a half million dollars was being spent on a public-relations campaign to polish the image of the embattled state agency after the Interstate 35W bridge collapse last summer.
(2008/03/21) Though no votes have been cast, though no official decisions have been made, a recent proposal to have certain sized feedlots circumvent the public input process was declared DOA (dead on arrival) by county board chairman Dwyane Voegeli and the rest of the county commission.
(2008/03/13) Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and two-year-olds have a lot in common. They both seem to pout and they’re both fond of using the word “no.”
(2008/03/12) A message to the Federal Emergency Management Agency: No one wants to live in your trailers.
(2008/03/08) It’s a kinder, gentler U.S. Army and Navy. It’s also wiser. While we expect our armed services to be tough, we also expect them to have a heart. And from a protest that took place outside the recruiting station last week, it’s obvious that those working in the armed forces are both.
(2008/03/05) The previous 36 vetoes of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty have stood the test of the Legislature. But not the $6.6 billion transportation bill passed on Monday. Both the money and the override couldn’t have come soon enough.
(2008/03/04) “The First Amendment directs us to be especially skeptical of regulations that seek to keep people in the dark for what the government perceives to be their own good.”

(2008/02/06) In Galesville, Wis., it appears that a baggie is not all that folks have left behind at any area used for the county fair.
(2008/02/04) Well, Bob Dylan always said you don’t need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows. And in Trempealeau County, you don’t need a weatherman to tell you because it wouldn’t do you any good.
