I support clean cars, clean legislative process (2008/05/09)
There has been some confusion about my position on the “Clean Cars” bill moving through the legislative process. The bill calls on automakers to provide us with less polluting, more fuel-efficient cars and trucks. I support the bill because it will save consumers money on fuel, decrease our dependence on foreign oil and decrease greenhouse gas emissions in Minnesota.

I’ll be listening (2008/05/09)
I would like to thank the Republican delegates of House District 28B for honoring me with their endorsement and responsibility of representing Wabasha, Winona and Goodhue counties in St. Paul.

To a great teacher (2008/05/09)
Thank you, thank you to a most tremendous person, Tory-Kale Schulz, a fifth-grade teacher at St. Stan’s Middle School.

There ought to be a limit (2008/05/09)
I agree with John Rybarczyk’s letter. It’s time to put a limit on the frequency with which writers can submit letters. Once a quarter should be enough for anyone. Why do some people feel the need to abuse the privilege? Like John said, enough is enough already!

Act now to protect our bluffs (2008/05/08)
Our bluffs are part of what makes Winona County such a wonderful place. They are dear to us and a huge asset to our county.

Franken shows leadership (2008/05/08)
I’d like to commend Al Franken for the serious and responsible way he handled a very tough situation this past week. First, the facts:

Pelowski should vote for clean cars (2008/05/08)
I am writing to express my surprise and chagrin regarding Rep. Gene Pelowski’s vote against the proposed clean cars legislation. Pelowski certainly must know that the clean cars bill is intended to require auto makers to produce more fuel efficient cars and trucks.

Clean cars bill will help us all (2008/05/08)
As gas prices continue to increase, it’s nice to know that some of our elected officials are taking steps to free our economy from the grips of a dwindling resource.

More coherent thoughts (2008/05/08)
Both Robert Hively-Johnson’s and Jim R. Miller’s letters to the editor on May 6 should stand as examples why submissions to the Winona Daily News should be limited to a more reasonable amount of time, lets say three months or so. That way, one could take the time to develop a more coherent thought process and not respond to an apparent insatiable urge to see one’s name in print every five to seven days.

Bush is no Truman (2008/05/06)
“Who controls the past, controls the future: Who controls the present controls the past.” — George Orwell

Bush to blame for high gas prices (2008/05/06)
Someone asked me what I thought about high price of gas the other day. Well, actually I think it’s pretty simple.

Why are politicians paid to campaign? (2008/05/05)
I wonder what would happen if I went up to my boss and said, “I want to take a year or so off to look for a better job, but I want to stay on the payroll while I’m looking?”

Officer treated worse than thief (2008/05/05)
This is in response to the front page story about a police officer that was “convicted” of assault.

$100,000 for legal fees is ridiculous (2008/05/04)
I am concerned about the recent revelation that the District 861 school board has spent $100,000 on legal fees.

Prom activities a huge success (2008/05/04)
With a sense of pride in our community and deep gratitude, I read in the Winona Daily News that “no extra police patrols were needed on prom night in Winona.”

Time to tax criminal religions (2008/05/04)
New York Catholic Cardinal Edward Egan recently criticized Rudy Giuliani for taking communion. Like others, Egan overstepped his authority and used the pulpit immorally and illegally to threaten or sanction those who vote or profess secular laws and politics they oppose.

Are poor, vulnerable of no worth? (2008/05/03)
Republican presidential candidate John McCain seems to have this belief that the poor, vulnerable and marginalized are of no worthwhile interest to the average person.

OFP used to start divorce proceedings (2008/05/03)
The order for protection needs to be looked at and changed.

Red Cross needs volunteers (2008/05/03)

While driving east on Third Street, yes, ’twas Third, a westbound driver caught my eye.

I read about a proposal to require air pollution requirements on autos in Minnesota.

Clannin just not right about Walz (2008/04/29)
In a recent letter criticizing Rep. Tim Walz’s support of the Employee Free Choice Act, Tom Clanin tries to smear the congressman by saying “Freedom shouldn’t be for sale.”

Preventing 18 deaths a day (2008/04/29)
War is killing us, abroad and at home. This stark reality finally warranted front page coverage in Winona in your April 21 edition.

The real costs of war (2008/04/29)
One very significant high cost of the Iraq War that Stiglitz and Bilmes do not include in their “The Three Million Dollar War” is the very real cost of the quality of life impairment of wounded veterans.

Your view: Colonel’s view on health care slanted (2008/04/25)
Our local Iraq war tactical expert, Col. Stan Gudmundson, (retired Air Force) usually reminds us of his military service when writing his letters regarding the questioning of the “war effort.”

Your view: Walz doesn’t stand for free enterprise (2008/04/25)
Our First District Congressman Tim Walz and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (both Democrats) have agreed to delay the vote on the free-trade agreement with Colombia. (I read this in April 10 and 11 issues of another paper.)

Your view: ‘We’ is now ‘I’ in these United States (2008/04/25)
“We the people of the United States.” Wow! What are the implications of this statement by the founding fathers in the opening lines of the Constitution of the United States of America?

Stop the insanity on building projects (2008/04/24)
What is perpetual motion? A chain reaction of events or costs, feeding on themselves and each other to cause new events to occur with no ending point or conclusion.

Was the pope’s message heard? (2008/04/24)
Pope Benedict’s meeting with some sex abuse victims was meant to promote healing and moving on.

Kudos to Mr. Galewski for writing about the dangerous condition of U.S. Highway 14-61 from Minnesota City to Homer.

City, schools to blame for late-night issues (2008/04/23)
I’d like to respond to the uproar regarding the 30-percent rule. I live in Knopp Valley, which is across from Saint Mary’s University.

School volunteers recognized for work (2008/04/23)
It has been my privilege over the past school year to watch so many volunteers (parents, staff and students) work uncountable hours for Winona Senior High School.

Stability balls a success story (2008/04/22)
The Winona community came together to make a big difference in the academic lives of local students. Thanks to our many partners, school staff saw an opportunity for improvement, identified a possible solution and spread the news of our success.

Fluff piece discouraging (2008/04/22)
I feel I’m a much more informed citizen of Winona now that I’ve read on the front page of the Winona Daily News that a college student is getting free beer in exchange for a butt tattoo.

Hively-Johnson’s credible? (2008/04/22)
When I read a letter in a newspaper, I consider whatever the author is expressing until I come across an obviously incorrect statement and then wonder what other incorrect information is being offered.

Winonans: Beware of TIF plan (2008/04/21)
I want everyone in the city of Winona to realize what will be taking place at the city council meeting tonight.

Freedom for sale (2008/04/21)
Last year, Rep. Tim Walz and some fellow congressmen passed the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act” denying employee’s secret-ballot election rights on whether to unionize their workplace and sanctioned the card-check petition system instead.

Opportunity to learn firsthand about Iraq from an Iraqi (2008/04/20)
After five years of war, it is amazing how little most of us know about Iraq.

This should be a golden opportunity, but is it really? (2008/04/20)
I read with great interest the guest view by Steve Schild, “Watch these films: Iraq war was a big mistake.”

Homophobia still rampant (2008/04/20)
Joe Losinski responded to my letter about gay love by stating the position of traditional Christian homophobia theology. No doubt Pope Benedict would be proud of his statement.

Medical marijuana should be legalized (2008/04/19)
There are currently 12 states that already have medical marijuana laws on the books, and it’s time Minnesota joined them. In our state, a bill has already been passed by the Senate, and the House will vote on it soon. The governor has indicated he may veto it, even though Minnesotans favor it by a 2-to-1 margin.

Thanks to WAPS (2008/04/19)
I want to thank Paul Durand, superintendent, and Brian Neil, board chairman, for bringing to our attention the recent accomplishments of the Winona Area Public Schools.

Unworthy by birth? (2008/04/19)
For those who have not been there in a while, the Diocese of Winona saw fit to renovate Sacred Heart Cathedral, essentially reversing the interior; the back of the church is now its front, with Huff Street just outside. It is confusing.

Community deserves praise for effort (2008/04/19)
Our community deserves a round of applause for a successful effort to include the Winona State Integrated Wellness Complex in the bonding bill signed into law last week. The $8.4 million approved puts this project on track to break ground this summer.

God’s law is quite simply his law (2008/04/18)
To my friend, John Rupkey: God’s law is quite simply that — His law.

What would we do without volunteers? (2008/04/18)
The Winona community embraces volunteerism and the Winona Area Public Schools’ children have been fortunate in having caring individuals who, on a consistent basis, give of their time and talents to our schools. I continue to be awed at the wide variety of ways in which volunteers support and enhance the work of educating our students.

What goes around, comes back around (2008/04/18)
I was at a popular local shop one morning last week. While I was waiting along with five others, an elderly gentleman came in but tripped on the front stoop of the business and fell to the floor in the doorway. He landed hard on one side, nicking his forehead and hand.

Your view: There’s no end in sight for this war (2008/04/17)
The White House is asking for another $110 billion in supplemental funding for the Iraq war, and there seems to be no end in sight.

Your view: Manufacturing loss hurts our defense (2008/04/17)
I was 11 years old when World War II started in 1941. (OK, so I’m older than John McCain.) I lived in the heavy industrial city of Canton, Ohio. As soon as we declared war, our local industries switched to manufacturing military supplies.

Your view: Appreciate local composting site (2008/04/17)
To mark my 77th year and the 16th year the Winona farm compost site has been open every day from dawn until dark, with zero government support, operating on an “honor system” with a public, many of whom are not accustomed to being treated honorably, I considered temporarily closing.

Hats off to the Warriors (2008/04/16)
The best basketball played in Minnesota over the last three years has been played by the Winona State University Warriors. On March 22, 2008, the team earned its second NCAA Division II National Championship in three years while compiling a 105-win, six-loss record during that period.

Homosexuality and created equal (2008/04/16)
I would like to respond to John Rupkey’s recent letter about homosexuality.

Stop relief flood abuse (2008/04/16)
Recently, I received a complaint regarding flood relief grants to businesses by the city of Rushford. Specifically, two businesses had each applied for and received a $500,000 loan from the city of Rushford in the wake of last August’s flooding.

WEA wanted to communicate with school board (2008/04/15)
The Winona Education Association did not release any information to the media this week. The WEA intended to communicate directly with the school board. The WEA executive committee continues to reserve comment.

Bravo for saving the abandoned chicks (2008/04/15)
Kudos to the Winona police officers who saved the lives of 105 abandoned chicks. Whoever left these chicks to die when they could have been taken to an animal shelter is seriously lacking in empathy, thus a danger to not only animals but to humans as well.

Obama’s plan of rapid defeat (2008/04/15)
Sen. Barack Obama has made his plans crystal clear: He wishes to end the war in Iraq as abruptly as he possibly can, resulting in a mortifying defeat for the United States.

College aid important to state’s work force (2008/04/15)
A welcome piece of good news is heading our way. Minnesota can secure $15 million in new federal funds for the state grant aid that currently helps 80,000 low- andmiddle-income Minnesotans afford college. With this new funding, aid can increase and more students can become eligible as long as our state policymakers keep Minnesota’s commitment stable.

Tax people, not businesses (2008/04/14)
I’m glad Ms. Lachinski liked my column on taxes.

Death by a thousand cuts! (2008/04/14)
Can you spin two-wrongs into a right? That is what the administration tried to do by putting a compliant general, David Petraeus, on the national stage to perform a script written by Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, feebly supported by actors that include Norm Coleman and Joseph Lieberman, to perform yet another version of their fear mongering skit.

Promises kept; how refreshing (2008/04/14)
I was delighted to see how Congressman Tim Walz is adding earmarks to legislation to try and bring federal dollars to us in southeastern Minnesota, and doing it in an open and transparent way.

Loss of cell phone helped us out (2008/04/13)
My husband was walking the dogs one evening and came across a white cell phone down by the river. He brought the phone home and I was able to find its rightful owner by snooping through the contact list and voicemails.

Big brother should leave Iraq (2008/04/13)
There is a rule of human nature that one learns very quickly as an elder brother. Whenever a large, strong force (such as a big brother) attempts to stop or break up a fight between two or more smaller forces (such as little brothers or sisters), the result is always the violence is always prolonged, along with unnecessary and potentially severe injuries to the big brother.

Letter writer wrong about Coleman (2008/04/13)
Your newspaper recently published a letter to the editor by Paul Bartlett of St. Paul (April 7) that is factually incorrect, and I’d like to take this opportunity to set the record straight.

Conservatives have wrecked America (2008/04/08)
The approval rating of President George Bush did not change since last summer, with 28 percent of respondents saying they approved of the job he was doing. Ex-Col. Stan Gudmundson’s blissful “hard corps!”

Fix wheelchair ramps so they work (2008/04/08)
For quite some time I have noticed wheelchair-bound people using their wheelchairs in the streets of Winona.

Don’t pass on global warming (2008/04/08)
Whenever I hear discussions about the national debt, one of the key points mentioned is that we shouldn’t leave this mess to our kids and grandkids to clean up.

There is hope of reducing child abuse (2008/04/07)
April is Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. Clearly, parents are struggling today: More than 10,000 Minnesota children are subjected to abuse and neglect by their parents or caregivers every year, and nationally, more than three children die every day as a result of maltreatment.

Losing everything — our minds included (2008/04/07)
We lost the water tower, We gained the public (private) swimming pool.

Trying to rile up the neighborhood or irritate old fogies who have lived in this particular area for 40 years, including us?

Time to repeal Bush’s tax cuts to the rich (2008/04/06)
The very well written article by Jeff Draskoci-Johnson, “Learn all the facts about tax cuts,” has me thinking. I continue to wonder why middle income people do not support repealing the tax cuts to the very rich.

Political cartoon was disgusting (2008/04/06)
Regarding the editorial cartoon in the March 31 edition of the Winona Daily News: This is not the first time I have seen disgusting cartoons in the Winona Daily News.

Let’s work together on health issues (2008/04/05)
Free will is the swinging door between the opposing worlds of cooperation and competition.

Act now to restore positive programming (2008/04/05)
Minnesota Senate File 3813 the Omnibus Supplemental Finance Bill does something remarkable n it shreds the often-overlooked common ground that exists in the abortion debate. What the pro-life and pro-choice folks disagree on is the issue of access to abortion. The former want it banned. The latter want it forever available. The common ground is that majorities of both sides believe abortion is a bad thing.

The paper doesn’t know Jack (2008/04/05)
Over the past month, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer and Al Franken have waged a spirited battle for the DFL Senate nomination. The winner will take on Sen. Norm Coleman in November.

Thanks to The Daily News for running a guest view about my effort to make those who use paper towels in school restrooms aware that used towels have as much right to enrich soil as fallen leaves and should not be sent to a landfill.

Become part of the ‘circle of life’ (2008/04/02)
In Tuesday’s Daily News, I read the letter by Shona Snater concerning her views on the disposition of your loved one’s final remains. I can understand her viewpoint, and if one chooses cremation you don’t need to be embalmed or have an expensive casket or even a vault, though I guess they’re available (for urns).

One of Winona’s finest (moves) (2008/03/31)

County knife board needs to be created (2008/03/29)
On the front page of the March 25 edition, there were more reminders of the violence people are capable of. One was “Drunken man attacks woman with knife.” Another was “Home invasion stabber convicted.” How can we allow this to go on? We must ban all knives!

The council that can’t make up its mind (2008/03/29)
Watching the Winona City Council meeting on TV on March 11, I once again could not believe what I was hearing concerning the levee and what was to take the place of the Wilkie. Here are the facts as I see them:

I saw Karen Dulak’s writeup in the Daily News.

WDN editorial was right on the mark (2008/03/27)
Recently, a copy of your trenchant editorial opposing proposed private meetings of the county planning department came to my attention. As a former land owner in rural Winona County, I applaud your stand.

Stan’s logic flawed (2008/03/27)
Stan Gudmundson’s recent commentary was flawed on several fronts, starting with his first sentence and the name-calling directed at the many thoughtful Minnesotans in both political parties who support more investments and raising more revenue for our common good.

In the March 23 Winona Daily News, in the convictions, I see that a person from Iowa was fined $24 for parking more then 12 inches from the curb.

Enough of Norm Coleman (2008/03/24)
In 2002, when Norm Coleman first ran for the U.S. Senate, he traveled around the state trashing Sen. Paul Wellstone’s record on support for the military.

Media and your child (2008/03/24)
For the past eight weeks, I have been in two classes that have opened my eyes to what we are exposed to.

A message to Rep. Tschumper (2008/03/24)
With all due respect, Rep. Ken Tschumper, the last person who claimed I did not understand an issue, prefaced his remarks with the “DFL is not in favor of taxing middle income people, but they are in favor of taxing the rich to make sure they pay their fair share.”

$550,000 would fill a lot of chuckholes on U.S. Highway 61 or put in a truck lane up the Highway 43 hill.

Dems should fear Hillary nomination (2008/03/22)
Democrats should be wary of nominating a candidate like Hillary Clinton.

Winona unity? (2008/03/21)
I find it disingenuous that Winona Unity, which professes to seek “building a welcoming and inclusive community,” holds its forums at a handicapped inaccessible site.

Rejecting illegal residents not racist (2008/03/21)
It comes with great surprise when reading Mr. McNeil’s article about racism in Winona. After all these years of being a model town, a good college town with upstanding citizens and a city well respected in Minnesota to hear racism be so rampant.

After reading Mr. Evanson’s letter concerning the annexation of some Rollingstone Township properties to the city of Goodview, we felt the need to state a few opinions of our own.

Letter writer misunderstood nursing home issue (2008/03/18)
Last month (Feb. 14), the Rev. Paul Ibisch of La Crescent, Minn., had another long letter critical of Sen. Sharon Erickson Ropes and myself for our votes in the last legislative session. He criticized us for everything from tax increases to nursing home closings.

WSU sporting teams have done well this year (2008/03/18)
Congratulations to the 2007-08 Winona State University basketball team, as it once again won the NSIC tournament. This team has won 89 out of the last 91 games. That is truly amazing! Just think of it — that winning percentage is an incredible accomplishment in any contested event. This team has taken the community’s shirt front and literally in the process put Winona’s name in the national spotlight.

Here’s a great fundraiser idea to keep the Wilkie (2008/03/18)
You got it. This is about the Wilkie, the big tourist attraction in Winona.

Clinton polarization of U.S. by race, gender (2008/03/17)
Bill and Hillary Clinton are polarizing Americans once again, this time through their surrogates (Geraldine Ferraro). Barack Obama, if he were only white, or black and female, things would be different.

‘Voting is a dearly won privilege’ (2008/03/16)
I am writing this letter to encourage fellow citizens to participate in the voting process. I am one of those people who tries to vote in every election. I think that is the least I can do.

Breaking the camel’s back (2008/03/15)
It feels like my back has been broken. Maybe Sen. Steve Murphy, Sen. Sharon Erickson Ropes, Rep. Ken Tschumper, the six misguided Republicans in the House of Representatives and all the others who voted for the transportation bill don’t understand what it is like to live from paycheck to paycheck. Maybe with their “per diem” increase they don’t need to stoop down to pick up the change that falls from their pockets. I do, and so do many other Minnesotans who are struggling to make ends meet.

The importance of physical education (2008/03/15)
I really wasn’t serious about my future major until a couple of my friends and I had a friendly argument about the importance of physical education.

I would just like to thank the individual who decided it would be a good idea to smear a block of cheese across the handle of my car door.

Join together for peace (2008/03/14)
The invasion of Iraq was wrong in the first place. To continue the occupation that leads to more deaths among U.S. troops and Iraqi children, women and men will not make it right.

It’s not the biggest tax hike in history (2008/03/13)
Letters from Republicans in both Winona newspapers have called Minnesota’s recent gas-tax increase the biggest tax hike in state history. That’s not true, according to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

Thanks from Snapper (2008/03/13)
We would like to thank Jeremy from Motor Parts and Equipment of Winona for being at the shop (Snappers Muffler Shop) soon after our fire started on the morning of Feb. 25. Thanks for alerting Snapper to the fire.

Thank you, Linda Pfeilsticker (2008/03/13)
Through the many letters criticizing Linda Pfeilsticker, I have capped my pen and bitten my tongue. However, I want to respond with tact and grace, both qualities Ms. Pfeilsticker imparts, to this most recent criticism.

Thanks for the memories, Favre (2008/03/12)
I woke up this morning watching ESPN to find out that Brett Favre was going to retire. I had to pinch myself to see if this was true or just a bad dream.

The ‘legality’ of public education (2008/03/12)
Those who would like to challenge in the courts the “legality” of public education in the state of Minnesota, and using all manner of absurd legal arguments to back their claims, may want to read Article XIII, sections 1 and 2, of the Minnesota Constitution.

Thank you for the support (2008/03/12)
Thank you, Darrell Ehrlick and the Winona Daily News, for the excellent “Our View: Feedlot hearings should be kept public” in the March 4 edition.

Neumann’s letter was insulting (2008/03/12)
In response to Mr. Neumann’s letter pertaining to the pro-life Republican Party — 4,000 young Americans dead, thousands wounded and scarred for life, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead and wounded and a country left in ruins for an unnecessary war built on lies and fear.

‘Mr. Excitement’ running for president (2008/03/12)
I woke up this morning and learned that “Mr. Excitement” had won enough delegates for the Republican nomination for president.

Protesters have no sense of history (2008/03/12)
As I get older, the one thing that frustrates me the most is the naïveté of each succeeding younger generation.

A proud Winhawk moment (2008/03/11)
Thanks to a Jefferson student — whoever you are! I am the proud parent of a Winhawk basketball player. Friday evening, I watched my son and his teammates give it their best only to fall to Owatonna by three lousy points for a second time this season.

Start sharing (2008/03/11)
What if everyone involved in professional sports only took up to $1 million pay for a year and the rest was given to the U.S. to pay off our national debt? Would it make a difference?

Respect Winona police (2008/03/11)
Thanks, Winona Police Department. On Feb. 27, I had two cars parked on the wrong side of the street. I had just moved and never had to park on the street. I think it was an honest mistake. I have veterans’ plates on both cars. One is a van; a handicapped sticker in the window also.

Great column about acts of kindness (2008/03/11)
While I appreciate and enjoy all of your columns, Käri, your piece March 2 on “Random Acts of Kindness” especially touched my heart, and I’m sure the hearts of many readers.

Drazkowski spreads misinformation (2008/03/10)
Once again, in his most recent column, Rep. Steve Drazkowski is toeing the Republican Party line and spreading misinformation about the Legislature’s recent investment in safe roads and bridges.

Make the U of M take a stand (2008/03/10)
It doesn’t make any difference to me what political party you support. As legislation seems ineffective, your help is needed.

Protest rally to focus on war in Iraq (2008/03/10)
March 19 will be the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Let’s get back to the top spot (2008/03/09)
When I moved to Minnesota 44 years ago, it was just like living in Lake Wobegon. The education system was tops in the nation, our roads were the smoothest and cleanest, and our government was efficient and cooperative.

Women not being treated fairly (2008/03/09)
Women are the strongest military applicants right now. Research across the disciplines show women are stronger applicants than men for jobs, colleges, fellowships, scholarships, etc.

Stop polluting lakes, waterways (2008/03/09)
When I walk along the Mississippi in Minnesota, I am always chagrined to discover the amount of garbage we are sending downriver, so I was bemused to find a letter to the editor in southeast Minnesota (of all places) asking for more.

Pandering to special interests (2008/03/09)
Democrats are on the hook to voters for making Minnesota have the seventh highest gas tax in the nation. One hundred percent of House Democrats voted for this bill, making our total gas tax 28.5 cents per gallon. License tabs are going way up, and the door has been opened for individual counties to raise sales tax a half-cent.

Something evenbetter than winning (2008/03/08)
Throughout this past basketball season, I have experienced something far more amazing than watching both the Winona State University men’s and women’s basketball teams continue to make history.

A crisis in our court system (2008/03/08)
There is a crisis in our court system. It’s been coming for the past century and will get worse unless lawmakers have the wisdom to change the system.

Fighting for a cleaner planet (2008/03/08)
I have a response to the March 2 letter, “Plastic bag debate is a waste of time.”

On the Catholic teaching of war (2008/03/07)
Thanks for the story the Winona Daily News did on the Saint Mary’s University Veterans Memorial on Feb. 19. I appreciated that the article brought out the effort that people have made to discuss the memorial in a respectful way, despite strong differences of opinion.

Letter writer not fully identified (2008/03/07)
In a recent letter to the editor, I believe the Winona Daily News was disingenuous in its identification of the letter writer. She was merely identified as a Winona State student. In fact, just days earlier in a front-page story about the caucuses, she was identified as the assistant executive director of the Winona State chapter of the College Republicans.

Why is Fed planning to cut rates again? (2008/03/07)
President Bush and Ben Bernake, Federal Reserve chairman, have said there won’t be a recession, just a slowing down of the economy.

We can build a green future (2008/03/06)
I attended the 2008 Energy Summit “Green Buildings and Green Communities” last week at the Tau Center.

Is it taxes or user fees? (2008/03/06)
I don’t believe someone who would spend months trying to convince the people of Minnesota that a 75-cent user fee on cigarettes was anything but a tax. Perhaps if the Democrats would have called the gas tax increase a user fee they would not have had to override a veto. The only problem I can see is that it may take a few pennies out of his pockets instead of just others all of the time.

Winona deserves higher standards (2008/03/06)
What are the standards that teachers at our Winona Senior High School are held to?

Norm fights for rural communities (2008/03/06)
One of the great frustrations of working in government is dealing with unfunded mandates. Local communities are often required to comply with rules and regulations they had no input in formulating and with money they don’t have. These unfunded mandates complicate local government and hurt the pocketbooks of everyday citizens with whom the costs often rest.

California style bluffs in Winona? (2008/03/06)
It is obvious to everyone who lives in this beautiful city of Winona that our bluff lands are unique and valuable resources.

End one of our biggest mistakes (2008/03/06)
As of Feb. 19, we have spent over $495 billion on Iraq.

Where’s old-fashioned customer service? (2008/03/05)
This past weekend I experienced the mother of all customer service horror stories.

WALC should continue its good work (2008/03/05)
As a new homeowner in the city of Winona, I would like to give praise to the Winona Area Learning Center.

Concerning the new gas tax (2008/03/05)
Across the river in Wisconsin, I believe the state gas tax has been five cents or more for a few years already.

Tax hike unfair to rural Minnesota (2008/03/05)
Everyone in the Legislature realizes that more funding for statewide transportation projects are desperately needed, particularly in rural Minnesota.

Transportation bill is a joke (2008/03/05)
Nothing like a big funny joke early in the morning to get the ol’ heart going. I am talking about this “transportation bill.” It’s the same old message I have been hearing for 50 years or more: We need money to fix roads which hardly ever get fixed and to create “jobs.”

DFL taxes excessive (2008/03/05)
A recent letter ridiculing my concern about legislators priorities flatly stated, the “DFL is not in favor of taxing middle income people.”

Republicans aren’t really pro-life (2008/03/04)
Wow! I think Danny Neumann has an awesome case for being pro-baby, but when it comes to pro-life, I will not vote Republican! At least until the old Republican party comes back — the one that Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul stand for.

Where’d the road money go? (2008/03/04)
It must be nice to be a politician able to raise taxes any time they need more spending money — for what, another raise, a higher per diem, a bike path, swimming pool, tennis court?

The GOP will fail pro-lifers (2008/03/04)
It is Danny Neumann’s assertion in the Feb. 25 edition of the Winona Daily News that the only issue that should motivate voters this fall is abortion.

Who should pay for interpreters? (2008/03/04)
I read April Cedillo’s opinion about the law about court interrupters.

Transportation bill doesn’t make sense (2008/03/03)
Thank you John Edstrom for the very informative editorial you had in the Feb. 23 edition of the Winona Post regarding the transportation bill. You possibly prevented the motorists of Minnesota from getting snookered into paying this increased gas and license tab tax.

Both sides may be wrong (2008/03/03)
Just because abortion is legal doesn’t mean it isn’t murder.

A Darwin award winner? (2008/03/03)
Apparently, eating tuna (ahi) sushi now results in mercury poisoning. The deadly toxic element accumulates in the organisms that eat it.

Lessons learned from the war (2008/03/02)
The Geneva Conventions define the following actions as war crimes — “murder, ill treatment of civilian population of or in occupied territory; murder or ill treatment of prisoners of war of public or private property, wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages.”

Plastic bag debate is a waste of time (2008/03/02)
Within the early days of the current legislative session, several lawmakers have offered bills to force retailers to recycle plastic bags. This landmark measure is sponsored in the house by Rep. John Lesch DFL of St. Paul. It’s Senate companion bill is sponsored by Sen. Ellen Anderson DFL, also of St. Paul.

A reply to Natalie Siderius (2008/03/02)
It is quite obvious that you would find an editorial by Darrell Ehrlick questioning the expense of $40,000 by the WAPS for an “outside” investigation into an “internal” matter as disturbing.

Reporter forgot to mention Perrin (2008/03/02)
I am writing about the Feb. 24 article “Prairie Home Hits Home for Fans at WSU.”

Here comes deficit spending (2008/03/01)
I agree with Lynette Lachinski’s letter Feb. 19 that we need to pay our taxes (and I do pay) to enjoy the services our city, county, state and federal government provide. I also agree that sometimes we have to pay for things with which we don’t agree.

Tax hike appalling (2008/03/01)
I am appalled that legislators raised the gas tax.

Fallen soldiers (2008/03/01)
The experience of war is carried differently within different people. With multiple and extended tours, there has been an increased strain on those who serve, a strain that can lead to serious mental health issues.

Let the chickens be (2008/03/01)
Chickens, chickens are good, like Bev Benter says. They don’t eat much and, controlled, they can be an asset to your grocery bill. Grandma and Grandpa used to sell eggs to Arcadia Fryers. They had to go by horse to sell them. So let them have their chickens.

Your view: S.M.S. (Support Mr. Schleif) (2008/02/29)
We were two of the lucky WSHS choir students fortunate enough to go on the trip to Europe last summer. We made some wonderful friends, learned a lot about a great culture, toured and performed in awesome historical cathedrals and visited life-changing historical markers. This trip was truly a chance of a lifetime.

Your view: Thanks for renewing Section 8 (2008/02/29)
I am writing to thank the Houston County Board of Commissioners for renewing Section 8 in Houston County. Section 8 is dedicated to sponsoring subsidized housing for low-income families and individuals. The housing authority signs the lease with landlords and pays the difference between tenant rent and market value.

Your view: It is English here (2008/02/29)
Rep. Steve Drazkowski is doing a good deed by introduction a bill that will make English our official language. It is wrong to lay off staff and hire interpreters so we can understand those who are unable or unwilling to learn English. It is time we consider the silent majority who pay the taxes.

Winhaven wants action (2008/02/28)
We would like to send an invitation to our city manager, Eric Sorenson, our mayor, Jerry Miller, all city council members, downtown business owners, the city employees who are supposed to maintain the streets and anyone else who has anything to do with snow removal.

What’s in your home, Hively? (2008/02/28)
As the liberal Robert Hively-Johnson writes his liberal propaganda comments to the Winona paper, most likely on a computer made in some foreign country, I would like to know how many “made in America” products he has in his home. One or two if he’s lucky, unless most of his belongings were made over 30 years ago.

Not much has changed (2008/02/28)
Having seen my first Winona Daily News headline, “WAPS denies teachers’ grievance” this morning in five weeks, I said to my wife, “Looks like not much has changed in Winona on the school front.”

The long winter (2008/02/28)
Everyone in Minnesota knows how long the winter has been.

Rep. Drazkowski has courage (2008/02/27)
I want to publicly thank Rep. Steve Drazkowski for having the courage to introduce legislation that will establish English as the official language of Minnesota.

Failure to change is always fatal (2008/02/27)
I recently had an exchange with a person who is smartly conservative, but not a “Trudy,” meaning he does not look down with disdain upon us dodgers, though he counts such souls as pals.

Four heroes help complete stranger (2008/02/27)
I would like to thank the four men who came to my rescue Feb. 16 when I lost control of my vehicle after hitting a patch of ice on Highway 248 outside of Altura, Minn.

Providing court interpreters is reasonable (2008/02/26)
I have read with interest all the recent letters about requiring people coming to this country to speak English or pay for their own interpreter.

Drazkowski’s bill flawed, unfair (2008/02/26)
As a state certified interpreter for Minnesota, I am deeply troubled by Rep. Steve Drazkowski’s inflammatory and misguided editorial (“Demand for Interpreters Costing County”).

Giving to the war memorial (2008/02/26)
I noticed the change of design for the military memorial at Saint Mary’s University.

Elect pro-life candidates (2008/02/25)
What should be the core issue in any election that motivates voters?

A death to remember (2008/02/25)
Before this day is over, 2,000 children are going to die. Not from war, not from murder, but by something easily preventable: those children are going to die from drinking dirty water.

Good science leads to wise decisions (2008/02/25)
I read about the future proposed changes to agricultural permitting process in the Winona Post. It looks like more of the same.

Interpreters benefit outweighs the cost (2008/02/24)
I am proud that Minnesota is committed to providing court interpreters for people who do not speak English and for deaf people who use American Sign Language.

What’s the return on our taxes (2008/02/24)
I don’t mind paying my fair share of taxes, and I understand why we all have to pay taxes.

Stop the media fuss over celebrities (2008/02/24)
In response to the Jan. 23 article discussing Heath Ledger’s death, I feel it is tragic how media portrays celebrities.

Support for plow drivers (2008/02/24)
Living in this beautiful area along the Minnesota and Wisconsin border, we are blessed with the ever-changing four seasons. With that, we know one thing is always certain to come — Old Man Winter.

What a waste (2008/02/23)
What kind of Winona school board would hire more educated idiots for $43,000 to find out why the Poland trip came up $19,000 short? Seems to me they could have investigated that within the administration.

Food is affordable, and still needed (2008/02/23)
Food is so affordable in the U.S., it takes just 37 days for most Americans to pay for their entire year’s food supply. That’s less time than it takes to earn enough to pay taxes or pay for housing or health care.

Walz kept his promise (2008/02/23)
Our congressman, Tim Walz, promised us that he would not take a pay raise until the federal budget was balanced and the minimum wage was increased.

Catherine, abortion is legal (2008/02/23)
My reply to Catherine Gostomski: Abortion is legal.

Be discriminating: Buy American (2008/02/22)
It’s time Americans begin to buy U.S. vehicles, now that our products reflect former high standards.

A message to Garrison Keillor (2008/02/22)
Mr. Keillor: Although my 2-year-old will prevent me from being present in person, I’m looking forward to your upcoming show in Winona.

Bring people back to Lewiston (2008/02/22)
There were not a lot improvements to business and job creation in Lewiston after the tornado years ago that seem to be wasting away.

Chickens are green (2008/02/21)
Do you like the environment? Do you want a better future for your children and grandchildren? Have you considered what $5 a gallon of gas would do to the price of groceries? Do you recycle?

Tell our legislators to stop it (2008/02/21)
If bio-tech firms don’t want to risk investing in human cloning, why should we?

Walz works for Minnesota (2008/02/21)
Two Republican candidates for Congress in southern Minnesota, Dick Day and Brian Davis, have made a show of declaring their opposition to congressional earmarks — federal funding that members of Congress bring home to meet urgent needs in their districts. A third candidate, Randy Demmer, has yet to speak up.

Galewski’s claims about taxes wrong (2008/02/20)
Jim Galewski is irresponsible. I’m talking about the numbers that he looked up on the Internet that support his theory that we pay less taxes then when Clinton was in office.

Impacted waterways need more attention (2008/02/20)
Thank you for your article in the Jan. 24 issue concerning the number of polluted lakes and waterways in Minnesota. I was alarmed to learn that more Minnesota lakes and rivers are polluted than ever before. As a student in Minnesota, I feel obligated to care for our many lakes and waterways so that future generations can experience Minnesota’s natural attractions as I have.

Diocese on no moral high ground (2008/02/20)
Well, what a mess. A single Catholic school teacher signed a contract to be a moral example. She had sex. She got pregnant. She didn’t abort the child. Her bosses requested her resignation. She went to the media.

Flood volunteers are a community resource (2008/02/19)
The August flooding of southeastern Minnesota was a tragedy. From those who lost their homes, and for others who have been affected in ways that one could hardly fathom. With quite a bit of cleanup left to do, it is still inspiring to see all of those who care so deeply for the victims almost six months later.

Sometimes we pay for things we don’t want (2008/02/19)
I feel the need to respond to a letter written by Paul Ibisch titled “Don’t fill sessions with new taxes and broken promises.”

People coming to U.S. should learn English (2008/02/19)
I don’t understand the ongoing discussion about English as the language of America. As a first-generation immigrant, I think I am somewhat qualified to speak about this issue.

Alternate-side parking rules should be fair (2008/02/19)
For more than three months now, the people in Winona have been forced to follow the alternate-side parking ordinance. If you decide not to follow this law, you can face either a relatively small parking ticket of $25 or you can be unfortunate enough to face that and a charge of $115 for towing.

Will you ever get an abortion, Frank? (2008/02/18)
I am responding to Frank Schnurstein’s letter published Feb 8.

McCain as a Democrat? Ha! (2008/02/18)
I got a real chuckle out of the editorial cartoon on Valentine’s Day showing a sadder-but-wiser Democratic donkey pining over what might have been — John McCain as a Democrat.

English-only bill just won’t work (2008/02/18)
While I can appreciate Rep. Steve Drazkowski’s concern for interpreter costs in Winona County and for safe driving by non-English speakers, I believe his bill solves nothing.

Risky driving (2008/02/17)
Regarding the Feb. 6 article, “St. Charles teen killed in crash identified,” I am deeply saddened not only by the fact that a young woman with so much potential has passed away, but that she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of her accident.

Experience helped (2008/02/17)
I want to extend my thanks to all of the experienced caucus voters who showed great patience when helping the large number of new students who took part in the DFL, Precinct 1/Ward 3 caucus.

A step backward (2008/02/17)
I am writing about the “Women in Business.”

Democracy in action (2008/02/17)
As a first time voter, I recently took part in the caucuses and now look forward to the upcoming elections.

Paradise or house of death? (2008/02/16)
It has been a long time since I have read a column with more distaste than Jerome Christenson’s about the “House of Paradise.”

Glad Ehrlick doesn’t run the schools (2008/02/16)
I find Darrell Ehrlick’s editorial regarding the school district’s expenditure of funds to investigate and document potential wrongdoing of teachers and administrators in the district disturbing.

What’s best for the students (2008/02/16)
Decision making in today’s education system can become a struggle between school officials due to differences in opinion.

Something’s not quite right (2008/02/15)
It’s one thing for President Bush to call upon the American people to “stay the course” and support whomever wins the GOP’s presidential nomination toward those ends.

What do tax cuts really mean? (2008/02/15)
Let’s take a short trip through recent history. In 1981, the Economic Recovery Tax Act was passed. At its core was this idea: Let the wealthy keep more of their money so that they can invest it; the investments will stimulate the economy, create jobs and so the effect on government revenue will be neutral.

Beyond outrageous (2008/02/15)
Cal Thomas wants the United States to “send Iraq and Afghanistan a bill for what we have done and are trying to do for them ...”

Wallflowers win nothing (2008/02/15)
“History is a vast warning system.” n journalist Norman Cousins

English measure would help assimilation (2008/02/14)
I am writing in support of Rep. Steve Drazkowski’s bill that would make English the official language of Minnesota. The bill provides a great incentive for immigrants to learn the English language. This also helps them assimilate to our American culture sooner, enabling them to become more productive and independent in their careers, schools and communities.

Women deserve better than abortion (2008/02/14)
The recent letters of Dawn Schively and Frank Schnurstein have shown just how strong the opinions are of those who view a woman’s right to choose as the utmost of importance when it comes to deciding on abortion.

Don’t fill session with new taxes, broken promises (2008/02/14)
For the new legislative session, could we request a change of heart from Rep. Ken Tschumper and Sen. Sharon Ropes Erickson?

Using the easy button shouldn’t be an option (2008/02/13)
After reading proposed changes to Winona County’s feedlot ordinance, I ask what would be gained?

Chickens in the city won’t be very pretty (2008/02/13)
I stand firmly against having chickens in the city. Now, don’t get me wrong; I think chickens would make wonderful pets. They don’t bark at night. If they have to go in my front yard, it won’t be much. And although they’ve been known to bite, they probably won’t rip off an arm or leg.

Judge Johnson, you have my full support (2008/02/13)
I think we all need to thank Judge Margaret Shaw Johnson for the job she’s doing in Winona. It’s a tough job, but she’s trying to protect everybody’s right under the law. Judges are there to protect your constitutional rights as well as local and state laws. It’s a lot to have on your mind at one time. If people listen, they’ll learn that drugs and alcohol are not the answer to problems.

Irresponsible drivers (2008/02/12)
My thoughts are that those people who cause accidents due to excessive speed for conditions should have their licenses revoked for

Answering Arcadia’s questions (2008/02/12)
The Wisconsin primary is just under two weeks away, and many people are saying almost anything to get votes.

Permanent bases in Iraq an injustice (2008/02/12)
The Bush administration has maintained from the beginning that our government has no intentions of building permanent bases in Iraq. Congress has repeatedly passed legislation, which the president has signed, against such a move.

Feel good about WSU (2008/02/12)
First of all, I wish to comment on the article in the Winona Daily News Neighbors section regarding the story of Matthew Edens, a Winona State University student holding the sign with “Free Hugs,” in need of a “warm fuzzy.” I thought the article was refreshing after all of the politics we have been hearing forever. It seems like in this world today with the many tragedies and sadness going on with almost everyone, we all have a story to tell. But his was unique, very special, so I want to say, “thank you,” Matt. Keep up the good work. I may come looking for you! It’s not so fun standing outside in the cold doing something nice to make someone feel better. Good for you! Good luck to you! One hundred thirty hugs in an hour is a lot. You made a lot of people happy. If you want to feel encouraged, please read the Neighbors section

Galewski should applaud board, not attack them (2008/02/11)
Not so fast, Jim Galewski. In your most recent attack on the Winona Area Learning Center and the Winona Public Schools on Feb. 1, you blame the school “board” for placing the ALC in a tavern 20-plus years ago and smugly proclaim that this decision “was not the community’s.”

$50 bill for Valentine’s Day (2008/02/11)
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Drazkowski doesn’t understand due process (2008/02/11)
I am writing in response to Rep. Drazkowski’s opinion piece in Feb. 6 edition of the Winona Daily News, justifying proposed English-only legislation as a cost-saving measure for our judicial system. Even if this bill is approved, the requirement that interpreters be available for those Minnesotans with limited English language skills will not go away. The reason for this is that the U.S. Constitution guarantees due process of law in judicial processes.

Consumption was a disease when I was born (2008/02/11)
Seen on the Internet: “Mommy, the free hand of the market is touching me inappropriately!”

Make Winona more welcoming (2008/02/10)
The recent events at Chatfield High School underscore the need for making everyone feel welcome in our community. This is just the most recent example of hateful acts to people in our communities. Winona Unified will be hosting its first in a series of forums on inclusion and diversity in our community at 7 p.m. Monday at the Winona Arts Center, which is located at the corner of Fifth and Franklin streets.

Feedback still needed for fine arts (2008/02/10)
On behalf of the members of the Winona Fine Arts Commission, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the people who attended our open forum on Jan. 31.

Wal-Mart column missed key points (2008/02/09)
Darrell Ehrlick’s recent defense of Wal-Mart is most notable for its omissions.

Consider the cats (2008/02/09)
People responsible for current opinions about feral cat colonies and their management need to look at Nathan Winograd’s book “Redemption.” In it, Winograd describes trap-neuter-release /feral cat management implemented in San Francisco, King’s County, N.Y., Philadelphia and other towns across the U.S.

Re-elect Kimmel (2008/02/09)
I am writing this letter to express my support of John Kimmel for mayor of Arcadia. Each mayoral candidate has varied experience, ability and knowledge. Only Kimmel has shown a commitment to public safety, crime deterrence and emergency preparedness.

Planning commission needs public input (2008/02/08)
I have lived outside of Lewiston in Warren Township since 1979, and I am a lifelong resident of Winona County.

Will you ever get pregnant, Tom? (2008/02/08)
I am responding to Tom Parlin’s letter published Feb. 2, which was a rebuttal to Dawn Schively’s commentary on abortion published Jan. 30.

A Minnesota health plan? (2008/02/08)
I have heard and read debates on health care from conservatives, liberals, physicians and patients. We all know people who have suffered from unexpected health problems or job loss.

The road to the White House (2008/02/07)
Four years ago, America was introduced to Barack Obama.

Franken not a good fit for Minnesota (2008/02/07)
Al Franken’s travels around the state to college campuses trying to get the votes of young people are well documented. He has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on television commercials trying to portray himself as a nice guy. He has even enlisted his fourth grade teacher to give a testimonial about what a nice boy he was in elementary school.

As a mixed girl from Chatfield High School and having 20/20 hindsight, my family knows exactly what the Stoos’ are going through and aren’t one bit surprised.

McCain will restore integrity to office (2008/02/04)
If you watched the recent Republican debate, you noticed that Mitt Romney accused Sen. John McCain of not having his facts straight, saying, “Facts are stubborn things.” Unfortunately for Mitt, he failed to check his facts, because he was wrong on almost all of them, and McCain was right.

Having been the owners of chickens for a brief time, we would like to weigh in on the chicken debate here in Winona.
