Winona County Historical Society executive director Mark Peterson has his sights set on a new leadership role: mayor.
Peterson’s announcement Tuesday came less than 24 hours after four-term Mayor Jerry Miller said at Monday night’s council meeting that he will not seek re-election.
“I think Mayor Miller has done a good job, and it’s not the kind of race I would have wanted to run against him,” Peterson said. “But now that he’s decided to retire, it seems like an opportune time to give it a shot.”
Peterson began working for the historical society in 1983. Peterson has worked with a number of local and state organizations, including the city’s Heritage Preservation Commission, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Minnesota Historical Society. Peterson is also an adjunct history professor at Winona State University.
“I’m pretty passionate about Winona,” Peterson said. “It’s an opportunity to try to make more of a difference in a community I care a lot about.”
The official filing period opens May 22 and runs through June 5.
