Two 18-year-olds are charged with felonies for beating and robbing a Winona man they lured to a secluded area near Bud King Ice Arena, after they sent him text messages pretending to be a girl “interested in hooking up,” court documents state.

William Curtis Perry of Minnesota City, Minn., made his first appearance in court Friday on four felony charges related to the assault – first-degree aggravated robbery, aiding and abetting first-degree robbery, third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm, and aiding and abetting third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm.

Brandon Michael Osburn of Winona has been charged with aiding and abetting first-degree robbery and aiding and abetting third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm. He will make his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Each robbery charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine, and each assault charge is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Perry and Osburn are two of four men involved in the Oct. 22 incident who were named in a criminal complaint in Perry’s court file. Court records do not show any charges filed against the other two others, ages 17 and 18. County Attorney Chuck MacLean did not return a call Friday seeking comment.

The men targeted the victim after he told Osburn’s friends that he wanted to beat up Osburn, according to the criminal complaint. Osburn sent the victim a series of test messages posing as a girl, arranging to meet him at the ice area.

The four men watched the victim from a distance for about 25 minutes before sending him another text message, telling him to walk to another building nearby, they told police.

Osburn, Perry and the 17-year-old left the 18-year-old’s vehicle and approached the victim. The men gave differing accounts of the assault, but one of the men punched the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground, where the men punched and kicked him until he passed out.

Perry rummaged through the victim’s pockets, taking his cell phone valued at $400 and a pair of headphones, the men told police. The victim reported that about $80 cash was also taken from him, but the men disputed that.

“I was the one who raided his pockets, and there was no money whatsoever,” Perry told police.

The victim was unconscious for about two hours before he woke up, walked to Walmart and called police, the complaint states. Police used descriptions of the attackers and the phone number the text messages were sent from to identify the four men.

Judge Mary Leahy set unconditional bond for Perry at $50,000.
