Sheldon Hanson, of Augusta, Wis., has been hired as interim fiscal affairs director for the Winona Area Public Schools. Hanson fills the position left vacant when Jeff Seeley resigned Sept. 11.

Hanson's appointment was announced by the school district Wednesday afternoon. His first day will be Monday.

"I'm looking forward to being a part of the area school district team," Hanson said.

He is a recently retired Chippewa Valley Technical College accounting professor and department head. He holds a bachelor of business comprehensive accounting degree, and a master of business administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and an educational specialist degree from UW-Stout.

In addition to his academic career, Hanson was an accounting-finance specialist and auditor for the Air Force and worked in the private sector as an auditor and controller.

"I think we are lucky to find someone with his background," said WAPS superintendent Paul Durand. "He has an extremely important role to fill in the school district.

"His experiences from the private sector and work as an auditor may be very helpful, especially as we navigate through the issues facing us in this tough economy."

The district will advertise for a permanent director in January and plans to fill the position by July 1.
