Scratch-off guru: Minnesota City man wins $100,000 — again

Some people have all the luck, or so the saying goes.

When it comes to playing the lottery, Mike Mendyk appears to be one of those graced with good fortune.

The Minnesota City man recently found himself $100,000 richer — for the second time in just more than a year.

Mike and his wife, Becky, last week beat odds of 1 in 610,000 to win the big prize on a $5 Cash and Cadillac scratch-off ticket, revealing the amount outside on the couple’s deck by scraping the ticket with Mike’s lucky scratcher, a silver envelope opener.

It was the same one Mike used in June 2012 when he won an identical amount on a Walleye Winnings ticket.

The first go-around, Mendyk teased himself a little more.

He resisted scratching off the entire card, instead leaving enough for surprise and scanning it at a local convenience store, where the machine told him he had won at least $599. He then took Becky to the store where they scanned it a second time, before she made him finally scratch off the rest of the ticket.

But the pair’s reaction both times around was exactly the same.

“We started jumping up and down and yelling,” Mike said. “The neighbors knew it, believe me.”

Then there was hugging and disbelief.

“We couldn’t have won twice, could we?” the couple thought.

Yes. No matter how unlikely.

The couple planned to travel Friday — Mike’s 51st birthday — to the Minnesota Lottery headquarters in Roseville, Minn., to claim the money, at which point the win is considered official, then continue to Minneapolis for a Twins game.

“Life is good,” Mike said.

The couple last year used some of their lucky money to help pay for their fall wedding, a honeymoon to Jamaica, and a pool table.

This time around, Mike and Becky plan to use a portion of their winnings to buy a house together, since they both still own the separate places they bought before walking down the aisle.

Some of the cash also may cover an anniversary vacation later this year, Mike said.

The rest, they’ll keep.

“Now we’re going to just live life and be happy,” Mike said. “And win again.”
