Former Winona-area legislator Steve Sviggum has been appointed commissioner of the Minnesota Management and Budget office.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced the appointment Tuesday. Sviggum takes the position Dec. 2. He succeeds Tom Hanson, who is leaving the Pawlenty administration for the private sector.

“Steve has a wealth of government experience that will provide steady leadership at MMB as we conclude our work and prepare to transition to a new administration,” Pawlenty said.

Sviggum has served as the commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry since 2007. He is a former GOP state legislator representing District 28B who served four terms as Speaker of the House and three terms as House Minority Leader.

Cindy Valentine, currently deputy commissioner of Labor and Industry, will become the agency’s temporary commissioner.
