The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District will shut down its Mississippi River locks and dams to navigation next week for winter maintenance work, district officials said.

They will close Monday regardless of the weather, officials said.

The district operates 13 locks and dams, from Upper St. Anthony Falls in the Twin Cities to Lock and Dam No. 10 in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Lock and Dam No. 6 near Trempealeau, Wis., and Lock and Dam No. 7 near Dresbach will be closed until March 9, weather and river conditions permitting, to install bulkhead slots.

Warm weather this fall allowed the corps to keep its locks and dams open longer than usual. The average close date for the navigation system in St. Paul is Nov. 30.

Statistics for the 2009 navigation season are not yet available, corps officials said.
