There will be two fundraisers this weekend to help rebuild the Winona Islamic Center destroyed by a September fire in downtown Winona — though one of them is a bit of a drive away.
One fundraiser will be at First Congregational Church from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, where Indian cuisine meals will be offered for $10 through cooperation with Winona State University’s Bangladesh Student Association. To reserve a spot, call the church at 507-452-4829. Tickets will also be available at the door.
A separate fundraiser will be at the New Brighton Community Center north of Minneapolis, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, where a catered dinner will be offered and there will be a featured guest speaker, Sheikh Fisal Hammouda. Tickets for that event are available by calling the Winona Islamic Center’s religious affairs director, Hamid Quraishi, at 507-312-0307.
If you can’t attend either fundraiser, you can still donate — there’s an account set up at Eastwood Bank in the center’s name.
The center was destroyed after a fire broke out between the ceiling and roof of the Third Street building Sept. 13. The fire also destroyed two other buildings — the former Brosnahan Law Firm and Sole Sport — which are expected to be demolished soon.
There’s no clear timetable or location for rebuilding the center. Center members continue to worship at spaces around town community organizations have donated. For the next few Fridays, they plan to gather in WSU’s dining room area.
