Richard Duane Martin, 53, surrounded by his loving family, left us for a new adventure Tuesday, July 26, 2011.
Unable to overcome the injuries sustained from a bicycle accident, it was time his spirit bid farewell.
Born in Winona to Mildred and Adolph Martin, Rick grew up and still resided in the family home in Minnesota City.
He graduated from Winona Senior High School, Winona Technical College and from Winona State University.
Rick held a variety of jobs over the years, most recently as a photographer for Herff Jones.
Rick was a charismatic fellow, never at a loss for words, who loved to meet new people and share life’s experiences. He followed in his father’s footsteps and served on the Minnesota City Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years.
His love for collecting classic vehicles and motorcycles brought him much joy.
If he wasn’t out in a collector car/truck, on a bike or a boat, or fishing in the creek, you could find him in his garage listening to his favorite Beatles or other classic rock and roll while tinkering on a project. His love for music started early on with his first drum set. Playing in rock bands his musical skills continued into his college years when he DJ’ed for KQAL. Some may still remember the “Martini Friday Late Afternoon Bash.”
Rick leaves behind his loving family: wife of 29 years Holly (Lafky) Martin; cherished daughter, Mercedes; sisters, Barbara Martin of San Diego, Calif., Susan Martin of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and brother, Wes Martin (Cynthia Dunn) of Trempealeau, Wis.; as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
Rick’s wish was to donate his body for scientific research followed by cremation.
Per Rick’s wishes, a “Celebration of his life” will be held at 6 p.m. Friday evening, Aug. 12 at Jefferson Pub & Grill — Riverside Event Center in Winona.
As quoted “I hate it when I see my name in the obits!” Until we meet again, Rick. Have a great adventure.
