Duane J. Marcotte
Duane J. Marcotte, 71, of Winona died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
Duane James was born June 25, 1937, in Marshall, Minn., to Maurice and Mae (Mitchell) Marcotte. He graduated from Marshall High School and attended the University of Minnesota. On July 25, 1958, he married Martha A. Blanchette in Marshall. Duane formerly worked for the Winona Daily News and other newspapers in Windom, Mankato, Brainerd and Robbinsdale, Minn.
Duane was a talented artist and was known locally for his artwork, especially caricatures. He also enjoyed writing short stories and poems. He loved his family and enjoyed going on trips with them. His wit and sense of humor will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; children, Patrick (Debbra) Marcotte of Hutchinson, Minn., James (Kimberly) Marcotte of Marshall, and Erin (Christopher) Stark of Winona; eight grandchildren, Ben, Christina and Brendan Marcotte, Marcus and Matthew Marcotte, and Michael, Jacob and Nicholas Stark; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Marcotte of Slayton, Minn., and Pauline Marcotte of Marshall; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Sean; and four brothers, Warren, Verne, Robert and Merlin in infancy.
Memorial services for Duane will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Chapel of Our Lady, Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, Betty Singer-Towns, prayer leader. Entombment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, in the chapel.
Duane loved nature and animals. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Winona Area Humane Society or Dementia/Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Judson O. ‘Jud’ Sorenson
Judson O. “Jud” Sorenson, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital in Winona, Minn. Jud was born Oct. 4, 1932, in La Crosse, Wis., to Obert and Nina (Richmond) Sorenson. Jud served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-53. He married Ruth Hesselberg on April 18, 1952, and they were later divorced. Jud married Jeanette Kramer on May 15, 1982, in Winona. Jud retired from Badger Foundry in May 1997 where he worked as a pattern maker for 17 years.
Jud enjoyed tinkering in his garage, woodworking, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette; three children, Eric (Linda) Sorenson of Delta, Colo., Dean Sorenson of Rollingstone, Minn., and Sandra (Mark Stevens) Sorenson of Stewartville, Minn.; four step-children, Randy Langowski of Goodview, Janell (Gary) Jack of Winona, Debra (John Kanthack) Langowski of Winona, and Ron Langowski of Winona; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; special friend and brother-in-law, “Hoofer” Cecil (Mary Rossin) Infield of Winona; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Donna Infield.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Scott Olson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.
Friends may call at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel today from 5 to 8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion of Winona immediately following the memorial service at the church on Thursday.

Thomas J. Semling
DODGE, Wis. — Thomas J. Semling, 51, of Dodge died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, doing what he loved the most — hunting.
He was born March 3, 1957, in Winona to Gerald and Lorraine (Dingfelder) Semling and he grew up in Bluff Siding, Wis. He was married to Roxann Gilson and they later divorced. Even after their divorce, Tom and Roxann remained friends. They always enjoyed spending holidays together with their children, grandchildren and other family members.
Tom was employed by the J.F. Brennan Company in La Crosse, and worked as a tugboat captain on the Mississippi River for 25 years. He was a member of the Dodge Sportsmen’s Club.
He was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan and an avid outdoorsman who truly loved hunting, fishing and camping. The Trempealeau River was his life, and he had every camping gadget one could imagine. Most of all, Tom loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Tom always said that he was the wisest and the oldest. He was fun to be with, and he always had a good story to share.
Tom is survived by his children, Raequel (Joshua Hale) Semling of Winona, and Dustin (Jori) Semling of Peterson, Minn.; grandchildren, Sierra, Owyn, Marshall, Shelby “Grandpa’s Little Girl,” Thomas and Lowen; brothers and sisters, Terence Semling of Buffalo City, Wis., Tim (Wanda) Semling of Arcadia, Wis., Linda (Scott) Heaser of Kellogg, Minn., Lori (Gary) Stanek of Goodview, and Ted Semling of Eau Claire, Wis.; sister-in-law, Bobbi Jo Semling of Fountain City, Wis.; and special aunt, Eva Case. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who were all very close and special to their Uncle Tom; as well as many other special and close relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother and hunting companion, Todd “Wally,” whom Tom deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. today, Dec. 10, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate. Spring burial will be in Pieper’s Valley Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. until the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be Terry Semling, Tim Semling, Ted Semling, Josh Hale, Linda Heaser, Scott Heaser, Lori Stanek and Gary Stanek.

Dorothy E. Malotke
Dorothy E. Malotke, 84, of Winona died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Lake Winona Manor in Winona.
She was born on March 26, 1924, to Herbert and Martha (Kamrowski) Hassinger. She was united in marriage to Alvin J. Malotke, and he preceded her in death on June 4, 1970.
Dorothy was devoted to her Catholic faith and a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and its St. Jude’s Guild. She was also a member of the Polish Heritage Society.
Dorothy worked for Watkin’s Inc. and Community Memorial Hospital’s laundry department. She loved doing her word puzzles and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings.
She is survived by her children, Mary Rose of Winona, Martha Konesko of Winona, and Mark (Evelyn) Malotke of Winona; grandchildren, Jason Rose, Carrie Presson, Joseph Konesko, and Aaron Konesko; great-grandchildren, Stormy Presson, Talon Presson, and Xavier Konesko; sister, Sylvia Hassinger of Winona; as well as other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with preliminary services at 10:30 a.m., at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home. Rev. Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, where the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — John B. Podominick Jr., 21, of Lakeville, senior at Winona State and 2005 graduate of Lakeville, passed away Dec. 7, 2008.

Dominic D. Marsolek
WHITEHALL, Wis. — Dominic D. Marsolek, 82, of rural Whitehall died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall.
He was born Aug. 10, 1926, in Chimney Rock Township, Trempealeau County, to Albert and Polly Marsolek.
Dominic married Victoria Lyga on Oct. 26, 1953, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence.
Dominic served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a supply clerk. He did many jobs and was a handyman. He drove a logging truck for 11 years and worked at Whitehall AG for 16 years until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie Marsolek; six children, Daniel of Pigeon Falls, Kenneth (Sue) of Whitehall, Germaine (Sue) of Blair, Sharon (Jim) Jolivette of Taylor, Mark (Sue) of Pleasantville and Mary (Bob) Johnson of Whitehall; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Betty) Marsolek of Independence; two sisters, Rosie (Lawrence) Kampa of New Orleans, and Betty Halama of Elk Creek.
Dominic was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Theresa Marsolek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Whitehall, with the Rev. David C. Kunz officiating. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Independence.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. There will be a prayer service followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

WINONA/LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Rudolph “Rudy” Thompson, 85, of La Crescent, formerly of Winona, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Golden Living Center, La Crescent.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Central Lutheran Church, 259 W. Wabasha St., Winona. Burial will be in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway, Minn.
Visitation one hour prior to the service at the church Friday.
