AREA ROUNDUP: Duo powers Alma boys

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — Alma High School’s boys basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter Thursday night to beat rival Cochrane-Fountain City 54-53 in a season-opening nonconference game for both teams.

Alma trailed by four points heading into the final quarter but took the lead in the final minute.
The Pirates had the ball and a final chance with 3.6 seconds remaining but settled for a desperation shot that was off the mark.

Grant Hickman led Alma with 17 points and Brady Ritscher added 16.

John Schmidtknecht led C-FC with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Weis added 12 points.

Arcadia 72, Blair-Taylor 70 (OT)

BLAIR, Wis. — Blair-Taylor stormed back from a 12-point halftime deficit to tie the game at the end of the third quarter, but in the end it wasn’t enough to overcome Arcadia and A.J. Bellville’s 21-point performance.

Blair-Taylor sophomore Hank Kujak’s scored 21, including 19 in the second half.

St. Charles 50, Grand Meadow 31

GRAND MEADOW, Minn. — Matt Ellinghuysen hit five 3-pointers and ended up with 19 points, and Jared Seinola added 11 points to lead St. Charles to its first win of the season.

Killian Smith had 11 points and Andrew Hardecopf had seven points, six rebounds and four assists for Grand Meadow.

Dairyland Conference

ECI 41, Independence 21


EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Eau Claire Immanuel remained undefeated on with a 20-point win on the strength of Tom Albrecht’s double-double.

Albrecht led the game in both points and rebounds, with 12 apiece, while Tom Naumann scored 11 and pulled down seven boards.

Joe Brandt led Independence with nine points.

RUSHFORD, Minn. — Jade Pelzl scored 18 points and Rachelle Ruberg added 12 to lead Rushford-Peterson past Wabasha-Kellogg.

The Trojans built and eight-point halftime lead and cruised in the second half.

Teresa Burkhardt led the Falcons with 23 points.

Caledonia 66, Chatfield 35

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Libby Augedahl scored 21 points to lead Caledonia in the win.

Aly Meyers, Cassie Gran and Amber Sorenson scored in double- digits for Caledonia as well with 16, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Leading for Chatfield were Mackenzie Kerska with six and Emily VonWald with five.

L-A 58, Fillmore Central 51

LEWISTON, Minn. — Alyssa Franzen had a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lewiston-Altura.

Angela Harstad had 14 points and Judy Mundt added 10 for the Cardinals, who led 30-26 at half.

Connor Nagle and Katie Melver each tallied 11 points for Fillmore Central.

Nonconference

La Crescent 73, Spring Grove 69


SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Spring Grove was down 16 points in the second half before whittling La Crescent’s lead to just two with a minute to play.

Despite the comeback and five girls scoring in double-digits, it was free throws that made the difference. La Crescent knocked down six more and won the game.

Jenna McDonough and Kayla Sandvik both scored 15 points for La Crescent, while Jacey Anderson had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists for Spring Grove.
