Jury trial set for man charged in multiple incidents

.
A Winona man facing nearly two dozen charges declined a plea agreement from the Winona County Attorney’s Office on Monday, opting instead for a jury trial.

Andre Maurice Chamblis, 25, faces charges that include fleeing police in a motor vehicle, assault and drunken driving, stemming from multiple incidents dating back to December 2007. His case will now proceed to a jury trial scheduled for Jan. 20.
Police say Chamblis was drunk Dec. 15, 2007, when he crashed a van carrying three young girls. He was charged with felony drunken driving because it was his fifth driving while intoxicated arrest.

Police also say Wal-Mart employees reported Chamblis stole items from the store and assaulted an employee as he left. An officer recognized Chamblis behind the wheel of a van the next day and attempted to pull him over. Chamblis fled, crashed the van and ran. Police finally arrested him after a two-hour manhunt through Winona neighborhoods.

While in jail, Chamblis was charged Oct. 7 with two counts of fifth-degree assault for slapping another inmate in the face during an argument about a card game. Chamblis was placed in an isolation cell because it was his third violation in as many days in the annex.

He is currently being held in jail without bail on allegations he violated his probation by using marijuana and not completing 100 hours of community service.

He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Jan. 8.

" Well I suppose a trial of your peers will get you more time if you don't tamper with them, you seem to have done almost everything else. You trampled a Wal-Mart employee on the way out, all by yourself! I hope they throw the book at you and I hope in prison you seek recovery because you are quite obviously controlled by substances. When nothing changes nothing changes. "

" You all know how I feel about violence and Thievery. Lock him up! I also feel strongly about Drunk Driving. Sorry bud, You need help. If only our society could have raised you better. If only our society could rehabilitate after we failed you. God help you! "

" We, the People, were offering this guy a PLEA DEAL!? WTF for? I say this case is worth spending the money on a jury trial. Just search the archives for the antics he's gotten away with so far.
