Andre Maurice Chamblis, 25, faces charges that include fleeing police in a motor vehicle, assault and drunken driving, stemming from multiple incidents dating back to December 2007. His case will now proceed to a jury trial scheduled for Jan. 20.
Police say Chamblis was drunk Dec. 15, 2007, when he crashed a van carrying three young girls. He was charged with felony drunken driving because it was his fifth driving while intoxicated arrest.
Police also say Wal-Mart employees reported Chamblis stole items from the store and assaulted an employee as he left. An officer recognized Chamblis behind the wheel of a van the next day and attempted to pull him over. Chamblis fled, crashed the van and ran. Police finally arrested him after a two-hour manhunt through Winona neighborhoods.
While in jail, Chamblis was charged Oct. 7 with two counts of fifth-degree assault for slapping another inmate in the face during an argument about a card game. Chamblis was placed in an isolation cell because it was his third violation in as many days in the annex.
He is currently being held in jail without bail on allegations he violated his probation by using marijuana and not completing 100 hours of community service.
He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Jan. 8.
