Elisabeth Ada (Betty) Eschbach
God, the Father, called Elisabeth Ada (Betty) Eschbach to her eternal home in heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. She passed away at St. Anne’s Extended Health Care in Winona, having moved from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2003.
Betty was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Chicago to Adolf and Amelia (Kapchinski) Pack. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939. Betty married H. Johann (Hans) Eschbach on Aug. 1, 1943 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Chicago. Hans was a teacher and musician. They lived in various parts of the country until settling in Cedar Rapids in 1956. Hans preceded her to heaven on Aug. 5, 1991.
Betty was a homemaker at first. In later years she worked as a legal secretary for several law firms in Cedar Rapids. She was a founding member of the Legal Secretaries’ Association in Linn County. Betty always enjoyed and took pride in her work as a legal secretary.
Betty was a person who loved music. She often sang hymns and songs at home. She was a beautiful whistler, a skill she retained well into her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Betty was a person who cared deeply for others. For many years she participated in “Reach for Recovery,” a program to help mastectomy patients rehabilitate after surgery. She loved her church, Holy Redeemer Lutheran in Cedar Rapids, and was active there for many years. She often visited people in the hospital and nursing homes. Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Betty is survived by four daughters, Pamela (Marvin) Wolfmeyer of Winona, twins, Noel Diehl and Carol Berendts of Noblesville, Ind., and Melody (Patrick) Greco of Carnesville, Ga. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jody (Carrie) Diehl of Bartlett, Ill., Danielle (Hans) Aeschbacher of Chicago, Andrew (Lisa) Berendts of Seattle, Wash., Andria (Mark) Berendts-Meyer of Indianapolis, Johann (Jessica) Greco and Zachary, Sebastian, and Gabriel Greco of Carnesville. Five great-grandchildren also survive her, Alexandria and Elizabeth Berendts of Seattle, Olivia and Axel Diehl of Bartlett, and Jude Greco of Carnesville.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hans; a brother, Edwin; three sisters, Frieda, Edna, and Dorothea; and a son-in-law, Terry Berendts.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel at St. Anne Extended Healthcare. The Rev. William Flesch will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service in the Chapel at St. Anne Extended Healthcare on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anne’s Extended Health Care. We are so grateful for the wonderful, loving care she received there.

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — Joyce Marie Schabacker, 70, of Fountain City died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at her home with her family at her side.
She was born in Waumandee, Wis. on Aug. 17, 1938, the daughter of Arnold W. and Laura (Wirtenberger) Zeller.
Joyce was united in marriage to Robert J. Schabacker at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waumandee, on June 6, 1964. Her husband, John, preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1981.
She worked for Elite Uniform Company of La Crosse, Wis. for a number of years, retiring in 2003.
Joyce is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City. She also enjoyed doing custom cake decorating and was an avid bingo player.
Joyce is survived by her four living children, James (Becky) Schabacker, Fountain City, and their children, Pam and Brittany; Lori (Greg) Tollefson, Alma Center, Wis. and their children, Spencer and Madison; Thomas (Holly) Schabacker, Minnesota City, Minn., and their child, Sierra; and Michael (Amanda) Schabacker, Fountain City and child, Logan. Two older sisters also survive, Lois Mueller, Waumandee, Wis. and Kay Luethi, Shawano, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son-David and brothers, Donald and Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Joyce’s life will be at
1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fountain City.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday beginning at 11:30 a.m. until time of services.
Joyce’s grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Gift of Life Transplant House, Rochester, Minn., or to the American Cancer Society.

NELSON, Wis. — Darrell E. Reinhardt, 77, of Nelson passed away on Friday, Nov. 21, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nelson. Burial will follow at Nelson Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Talbot Family Funeral Home, Alma Chapel and again on Monday at the church one hour prior to the service.
