Officials said fraudulent lottery and sweepstakes scams account for at least $30 million in losses each year in Minnesota.
In many cases, criminals use e-mail, phone calls and mailings to gain victims' trust and steal their money. The scammmers often tell victims they have won money, but that they must send in a payment to get it. Many of these scams target the elderly.
