Each child brought in $1 and then was able to wear whatever hat they brought for the day.
We raised more than $400 from 180 students and staff. All donations were sent to Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation.
Today, we received a very kind, heartfelt thank you letter from that school. More than 1,888 students and more than 100 staff were displaced. They have 530 students who are still homeless. Teachers lost lesson plans, books, most classroom materials, musical instruments and so much more.
These facts are from one school out of the hundreds, possibly thousands that were affected by flooding in June 2008.
I am well aware of the situation that some families in our area are still in trouble due to the August 2007 flooding. Most of my family lives in Stockton.
But please consider donations to this foundation. Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation, 346 Second Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
There’s a special thank you that goes to Stephanie Scharmer, who put so much time and effort into hat day.
