Melendez was born without arms because his mother was given thalidomide when she was pregnant with him. He learned to do everything with his feet, including play guitar. He came to national prominence in 1987 when he performed for Pope John Paul II, whom he met six times. Since then, he has traveled the world delivering a message of the importance of family, self-esteem, acceptance of others and choosing healthy lifestyles.
