Allen suffered a sprained right shoulder in Sunday’s win over Houston, an injury he played through, and managed two of the team’s five sacks. Afterward, Allen dismissed any concern about his condition by saying, “It’s football. You get beat up.”
But Vikings coach Brad Childress said Monday he’s not sure if Allen — who led the league in sacks in 2007 and was named an All-Pro while with Kansas City — will be able to recover in time to play the archrival Packers.
Childress said he hadn’t spoken with Allen or trainer Eric Sugarman for an update as of his noonhour news conference. He described the injury as a sprained AC joint in the shoulder.
“That is a painful, painful injury to live with, particularly where he plays,” Childress said.
Allen is tied for the team lead with Kevin Williams with seven sacks in eight games. Brian Robison, the primary backup at both end positions, would step in if Allen can’t suit up.
“That’s the thing about this league: At any point in time you’ve got to be ready to go,” Robison said. “We didn’t really know the extent of it too much. Just got to be ready for whatever happens.”
