Janice M. ‘Jackie’ Kelly | Verna Weist | Dan L. Willson | Romaine E. Ashelin | Orenetta Gummert | John Carl Schroeder

Janice M. ‘Jackie’ Kelly
Janice M. “Jackie” Kelly, 64, of Winona died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Jan was born in 1944, in Winona, to Florence (Kubicek) and Everett Goetzman. She married Walt Kelly in November 1966 in Winona. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Experimental Aircraft Association — Max Conrad Charter; Winona Amateur Radio Club. She was a former member of the board of directors of Winona Marriage and Family Counseling Service.

Jan was a very smart gal with a special talent for acceptance in working with people. She grew up with a twin sister who is developmentally disabled, and Jan graduated second in her class. She loved motherhood, and as the bipolar disorder developed, she put less time into employment and more into nurturing her family. She used mental health services as a client, then returned the favor by serving nine years on the board, working as a community support worker, and until recently, as a hospital auxiliary volunteer. She kept a journal since high school, and from its notes, wrote the story of her life with mental illness, “Journey To The Sun.” (www.hbci.com/~wkelly/)

Her passion was to show people that one can have a productive life even if you have a mental illness. She has had several articles published internationally that describe both her and her family’s experiences. During this illness, those articles have been asked for by her caregivers, as they have family with these issues.

Jan is survived by her husband, Walt; three sons, Ben (fiancé: Rebecca Nase), Andy, Tony (dear friend: Jeff LaFleur); her mother, Florence Goetzman; a sister, Joanne Goetzman; aunts and uncles, Rosanne Kubicek, Shirley Kubicek, Charles Kubicek and Gordon Holte; and other relatives. A son, Brian, died in infancy.

A time of sharing for Jan will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with Jan’s good friend, Pastor Kathy Redig, presiding. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials which will be used to help people affected by mental illness, especially bipolar disorder, their families, and medical practitioners, to better understand and more effectively work with them.

Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.fawcett-junkerfuneralhome.com. Services entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Winona.
