Ruth C. Kiefer
ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Ruth C. Kiefer, 86, of St. Charles died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at Golden Living Center-Whitewater in St. Charles.
Ruth was born April 27, 1922, in Winona to Grover and Adeline (Streiff) Brosig. She married George Kiefer April 27, 1945, in Elba. They lived in the Elba and St. Charles area their entire married lives. Ruth worked as the business manager at St. Charles High School, where she worked for 30 years.
She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and Rosary Society. Ruth enjoyed reading. She was an avid Democrat.
Survivors include three sons, Nick (Nenita) Kiefer of Shanghai, China, Bob (Mary) Kiefer of St. Cloud, Minn., and Chuck (Debbie) Kiefer of St. Paul; a son-in-law, Marvin Kleene of Pulman, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and a brother, Frank Brosig of Altura. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Aug. 2, 1989; and her daughter, Charlotte Kleene.
A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with the Rev. James F. Callahan officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Elba.

Diahlia Alivira (Jacobson) Olson
A special lady, mother, aunt, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma, Diahlia Alivira (Jacobson) Olson, went to heaven on Oct. 19 to join her husband, Harold; her daughter, Bonita; parents; grandsons, Zachary Smith and Wilbur (Brad) Holtan; sister, Myrtle Johnson; and brothers, Ernest, Truman and Oliver (Bud) Jacobson.
Diahlia was born Sept. 20, 1910, to Fred and Tillie (Abrahamson) Jacobson in the town of Elk Creek. She was baptized Nov. 4, 1910, and confirmed July 16, 1923, in Chimney Rock Lutheran Church. She attended Elk Creek School, where she received her diploma.
She married Harold B. Olson in Winona on Dec. 4, 1929. Harold preceded Diahlia in death in June 1984. They had two children, Bonita LaVonne (Bonnie) and Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Smith of Arizona.
Survivors include daughter, Betty (Aubyn) Smith; grandchildren, Kapi Ann Smith, Shelli Smith (Rod) Ethington and Wendi Ann (Jon) Schroeder, Lucinda (Mark-Sparky) Olson, Pamela Sue Holtan and Jill Knudson; great-grandchildren, Staci Martin, Zachary (Ellen) Richter, Bradly Lopez, Annie Ethington, Korey, Jessica and Michael Schroeder, Zach Olson, Heath Knudson, Maggie (Monte) Singh and Marshal Holtan; great-great-grandchildren, Carli, Carson and Louis Martin, Haley Lopez, Michael Otero, Madelyn, Qwendolyn and Jocelyn Olson, Jillian Singh, and Rollin Holtan; special nephew, Ardel (Teckla) Melby; and special niece, Teddy (Duane) Foss; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Diahlia worked many places in her younger years; Lee and Joan’s Coffee Shop, City Café, Foss Restaurant, R & S Market, Rip and Jakes and many years at the Trempealeau County Health Care Center as a registered nurses aide and Club Midway.
She enjoyed having coffee with her friends at City Café. She was the master potato peeler at Club Midway. She lived life to the fullest.
On Sept. 19, 2008, close family and friends were blessed to celebrate grandma’s 98 precious years with dancing, ice cream sundaes, donuts and lots of old stories. We will all remember this special time, along with many others, when we think of her.
Diahlia will be cremated, and in the spring her family will hold a special get together to honor her.
Marlon Lyle Halbakken
Marlon Lyle Halbakken passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis at the age of 53. Marlon was born Sept. 27, 1955, in Winona to Lucille Alice Cole Halbakken and Marvin Elmer Halbakken Sr.
He was raised in a farming community with six brothers; Marvin, (Laura); Gilman, (Judy); James, (Deborah); Mark, (Stephanie); Mitchael, (Kari); and Daniel. He graduated from Lewiston Altura High School in 1974. In his senior year, with the help of a class friend, Clare Craven, (son of Clarence and Mae Craven), he professed to serve God.
In the fall of 1975, Marlon started in the ministry in Minnesota. He then continued in the work in the Colorado and Utah areas. For the last two years of his calling, he had been in the Maryland and Virginia areas. Marlon touched countless souls and affected many, many lives in the profession and teachings of his faith and service to God. In his passing, Marlon extended peace and comfort to his family and friends in their knowing he is at peace with his God. Through his 33 years of ministry, Marlon gained boundless spiritual friends as his extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Lewiston-Altura High School in Lewiston. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the high school. Burial will follow services in Lewiston Public Cemetery.
Catherine M. Stoltman
Catherine M. Stoltman, 79, of Winona died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Casimir’s Church, Winona.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, where a Christian wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Marion L. Christopherson
Marion L. Christopherson, 84, of Wiscoy Ridge, Winona County, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at her home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona.
Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

WHITEHALL, Wis. — Mary E. Shepherd, 85, of Whitehall died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, in Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in United Methodist Church, with burial in Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Jack Funeral Home, Whitehall, and also one hour prior to the services at the church Saturday.

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Joyce Kurz, formerly of Caledonia, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at St. Joseph Rehab Center, La Crosse, Wis.
