Winhawks of the Week

Seniors Jessica Schmelzer and Joe Fliflet are the Winona Senior High School co-Winhawks of the Week.

Schmelzer, daughter of Mike and Kara Schmelzer of Winona, describes herself as friendly, unique, responsible, organized, spontaneous and outgoing. She lists art and history as her favorite subjects. She enjoys drawing, piano, Ultimate Frisbee and hanging out with friends. She says her family and a couple of teachers are her role models. Teachers describe her as nice, hardworking, friendly, responsible and polite. She is a good student who reaches out to others, they say. After graduation, Schmelzer plans to attend Winona State University for a year and then an art college to eventually open an art shop. Her advice to students is: “Get involved with school.”
Fliflet, son of Terry and Julie Fliflet of Minnesota City, is active with FFA, hunting and fishing. His favorite subjects are industrial technology, history and German. He says teachers, friends and his parents are his role models. He describes himself as enthusiastic, fun loving and hardworking. Teachers describe him as nice, hardworking, friendly, funny and reliable. He is a good student with a good sense of humor, they say. After graduation, Fliflet plans to go to college. His advice to students is: “Don’t take school too seriously, but work hard.”
