Lancers denied state bid in shootout

.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — The opportunities were there for the La Crescent High School girls soccer team.

And coach Ryan Raufus waited for the Lancers to capitalize on one Tuesday night.
However, Rochester Lourdes never allowed that to happen.

La Crescent and Lourdes finished two overtimes of their MSHSL Section 1A final in a scoreless tie.

However, the Eagles

(15-4-1) won the shootout 3-2 and advanced to the Class A state tournament.

Meanwhile, the Lancers finish 18-3 and one game short of earning its fourth straight state-tournament berth even though they outshot Lourdes 19-10.

“It was a good game from both teams,” Raufus said. “Unfortunately for us, we just weren’t able to hit the back of the net.”

Cheyanne Carpenter stopped seven shots for the Lancers. Lourdes goalkeeper Eliza Larson stopped 12 shots.

“Obviously this one is going to sting for awhile,” Raufus said. “But once these girls have had time to reflect on what they’ve done, they can be proud of what they accomplished.”
