The girls captured the conference title, the boys came away with fourth place and Winona coach John Ruggeberg took home Big Nine coach of the year.
For the girls, Claire Guidinger led the way for the Winhawks, finishing in 14 minutes, 39 seconds. Guidinger finished 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
“Claire ran away with first place,” Ruggeberg said. “From the beginning, she took command and stayed there the whole race.”
Kayla Ewert (15:21) finished fourth, Rena Dornfeld (15:37) finished 10th, Charise Wolvington (15:39) finished 11th and Danielle Wittenberg (15:50) finished 18th.
On the boys side, Jon-Michael Brandt was close to bringing home a conference championship. Brandt (15:51) finished second to Jacob Bastyer of Owatonna by two seconds.
“Those two were side-by-side the entire race,” Ruggeberg said. “There were several lead changes. It was classic cross country running for spectators. It was anybody’s race.”
Erik Chapman (17:06) finished 18th, Sam Miner (17:17) finished 25th and Ian Nelson (17:34) finished 36th.
