Time to restore America’s honor

.
The Grand Old Party presidential campaign continues to twist facts and state untruths to win votes.

More than 50 years ago, one of my college professors said eastern Texas oil was consumed to win World War II and North Shore Alaskan oil, a big issue then, would provide merely a blip in
U.S. consumption. Recent estimates state new offshore oil would take five years to develop and would supply U.S. needs for 19 days; and it’s still a fossil fuel.

Considering the deep, deep financial hole our country is in today, tax cut programs from either party are undefendable.

McCain’s pledge to maintain or make permanent current tax cuts for the wealthy is unconscionable. This is “change”?

More important, McCain’s pledge to fight “evil” scares me. The 9/11 attackers were from Saudi Arabia. Many countries could be classified “evil.”

We could easily become involved in any number of quagmire wars. In Iraq, without uniforms or a central command, it’s impossible to tell insurgents from the innocents. We’ve caused death, destruction, latent animosity and probably hundreds of bin Ladens.

This is winning?

Our military machine is terribly expensive. The Iraq conflict has cost us $6 trillion so far, money we could have used for health care, quality education and numerous social programs, plus humanitarian help abroad.

McCain proposes a freeze on all domestic programs except veteran’s benefits and a continuation of the “war on terror.” This is a wise foreign policy? I want our new president to restore friendly relations with free nations throughout the world. I don’t see any weakness or loss of honor in dialog and diplomacy with our enemies. I want our nation to be a leader in nuclear arms reduction, the green revolution, world health and to be a peacemaker.

I believe Barack Obama can do this. Vote Obama on Nov. 4.
