Marilyn F. Gieske
Sept. 21, 1938 — Oct. 3, 2008

Marilyn F. Gieske, 70, of Winona died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Marilyn Faye was born Sept. 21, 1938, in George, Iowa, to Fred and Elsie (Albertsen) Elfline.

She graduated from George Public High School, attended college in Colorado and New Mexico, and received a bachelor’s degree and master’s from College of the Holy Names in Oakland, Calif. She taught for several years in Oakland and Monterey, Calif. In 1969, she married Michael, her grade school and Sunday school classmate, and her high school sweetheart.

She is survived by her husband, Michael, Winona; a sister Jeanne Lewis, Berkeley, Calif.; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Services to remember Marilyn will be held in California at a later date.

George L. Wieczorek

TREMPEALEAU, Wis. — George L. Wieczorek, 27, of Trempealeau died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, in the town of Dodge, Wis., as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

George was born Aug. 3, 1981, in La Crosse, Wis., the son of Larry and Diane (Boberg) Wieczorek.

He graduated from Cochrane-Fountain City High School in May 2000 and then attended the Universal Technical College in Chicago. After graduation from UTC in 2001, George was employed by Peterbilt, and during that time, he earned his ASE certification as an automobile and diesel technician. He was currently employed by River Valley Construction, working in Arcadia.

In his spare time, George enjoyed watching NASCAR and cheering for the Green Bay Packers with his friends, and participating in various pool leagues and tournaments. He loved spending time outdoors hunting and riding his motorcycle, and was a member of the Road Dog Motorcycle Group.

George will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humor and fun, and the way that he could brighten anyone’s day. He was a loving and caring person who was always willing to help anyone, and could never turn anyone down.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

George is survived by his mother, Diane (special friend Bob Smith) Wieczorek, Trempealeau; aunts and uncles, Shirley (Dale) Scherbring, Nancy (Jim) Burt, Michael (special friend Amber Stiel) Boberg, David Boberg, Leona (Stan) Pozanc; Ginger (Roger) Glende, Mary Wnuk and Jerry Wieczorek; godparents, Michael Boberg and Becky Haines; and numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry; paternal grandparents, George and Loretta Wieczorek; maternal grandparents, Norman and Martina Boberg, and an aunt, Susan Yach.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City. The Rev. Rick Roberts will officiate. Private family burial will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fountain City.

Friends may call to support George’s family from 3 p.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Wieczorek, Gary Wieczorek, Dave Wiersgalla, Gary Wiersgalla, Rich Ratajczek, Adam Litscher, Bud Pehler and Chris Semling.

Ardell E. Hegland

May 21, 1919 — Oct. 3, 2008

HOUSTON, Minn. — Ardell E. Hegland, 89, of Houston passed peacefully from this life into eternal life on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born to Herbert and Frieda (Goede) Lemke on May 21, 1919, in La Crescent. She was baptized and confirmed at South Ridge Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural La Crescent. She attended Bush Valley Country School.

On Aug. 14, 1940, she married John H. Hegland, also at Immanuel Lutheran Church. John and Ardell farmed together on the family farm in Storer Valley in rural Houston until John’s death Feb. 2, 1995.

They had four children, Audrey Hegland of Houston, Paul (Charlene) Hegland of Hiawatha, Iowa, Susan (Arlin) Peterson and Duane (Eileen) Hegland of Houston and a special nephew Bryan (Deb) Hegland of Winona, whom they loved like a son. They had 13 grandchildren, Jeanette (John) Jacobson, John (Candi) Woxland, James (Tina) Woxland, Traci (David) Bunch, Brandon Hegland, Shauna (Andy) Rosenow, Brooke Hegland, Adam Peterson, Amy (Jackson) Hayek, Stephanie Peterson and Anna, Thomas and Emily Hegland. They also had 13 great-grandchildren, Matthew, Connie, Jack, Erik, Andy, Joseph, Samuel, Theo, Kayla, Andrew, Dane, Jonathon and Riley.

In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ardell is survived by two brothers, Lester (Lois) Lemke of Houston and William Lemke of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Janice Lemke of Caledonia; special friends Judy Anderson and Cora Wheaton of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Edgar and Donald Lemke.

Ardell loved gardening and was a member of the Iris Garden Club. She was a member of the Cross of Christ WELCA and the Valley View Nursing Home Auxiliary.

She was known for her wonderful cooking and baking and was happiest when she was spending time with her family, cooking for them, laughing and playing pinochle. She had a wonderful sense of humor even in the last hours of her life. Ardell had the unique and special gift of making each grandchild feel like her favorite.

Memorials can be given to the John and Ardell Hegland Memorial Fund at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center Hospice Unit.

The family wishes to thank the Houston Valley View Nursing Home and Heritage Court, Dr. David Momont, the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Unit Team, and Angie Happel for their wonderful and compassionate care of Mom.

Her last gift to her family was how to face death without fear through faith in God.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hoff Funeral Homes — Houston Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Sylvan John Schultz

July 21, 1917 — Oct. 3, 2008

ARCADIA, Wis. — Sylvan John Schultz, 91, of Arcadia died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in Arcadia.

He was born July 21, 1917, in Mount Angel, Ore., to Andrew and Martha (Feuling) Schultz. On Sept. 20, 1938, Sylvan married Martha Kupietz at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Arcadia. She died Jan. 1, 1997.

Sylvan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to working for Melvin Brandon Heating and Air Conditioning in Arcadia, Sylvan also was a foreman at Winona Millers in Winona and farmed with his father. He also worked for Nick Jensen doing furnace work and for Oakey Arnold doing construction. His last job was working as a laborer at the Arcadia Box Factory. Sylvan was a proud member of Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post 17, Bautch-Kokott-Johnson VFW Post 10671, and the Disabled American Veteran’s Association. He enjoyed gunsmithing, tinsmithing and carpentry.

He is survived by two daughters, Janice Elkins of Clarks Hill, S.C., and Shirley (Patrick) Gannon of Chicago; seven sons, Dennis (Ruth), Gerald, Vernon and TJ, all of Arcadia, Sylvan A. “Tony” (Barbra) Schultz Jr. of Winona, Donny of Galesville, Wis., and Robert (Denise) of Ettrick, Wis.; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene (Herman) Eichman of Trempealeau, Wis.

Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; daughter-in-law, Cathy Schultz; great-grandson, Talan Schultz; three brothers, Andy, Harlan and Vernon and six sisters, Evelyn, Adeline, Esther, Sally and twins in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial, with military rites, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Parish, Arcadia, with Father Michael Klos officiating. Family burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Arcadia, at a later date.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary. They may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Casket bearers will be Sylvan’s grandchildren.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff and doctors at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia.

Harold E. Wadewitz

Sept. 15, 1933 — Oct. 2, 2008

STOCKTON, Minn. — Harold E. Wadewitz, 75, of Stockton died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

Harold was born Sept. 15, 1933 on the family farm in Stockton. He served in the Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Harold married Joan Luehmann on June 30, 1957, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Silo. They made their home in Lewiston where Harold hauled milk as an owner operator for 10 years. He then worked for the city of Lewiston as city superintendent for 28 years. After retirement he and Joan returned to live on the family farm in Stockton.

Harold was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston and served as usher and greeter. He had also been a member of Lewiston Lions, Lewiston American Legion, Jaycees, served on the Lewiston Volunteer Department for 28 years and was a member and past-president of the Minnesota Wastewater Operators. He and Joan loved to travel, most especially to their home in Florida. He also enjoyed gardening, farming and camping.

Harold is survived by his wife Joan; four children, Mike (Linda) Wadewitz of Winona, Dave of Chatfield, Sara (Daryl) Oevering of Stockton and Paula Wadewitz (Steve Prigge) of Rochester; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Kim) Wadewitz, Bret (Katey) Wadewitz, Leah (Corey) Dufault, Rachel Oevering, Ross and Andy Wadewitz, Nick Oevering, Katelyn and Jordon Wadewitz; four great-grandchildren, Rakiya Oevering, Mason, Autumn and Cora Wadewitz; three brothers, Robert (Lois) Wadewitz, Roy (Rosie) Wadewitz and Jim Wadewitz all of Winona; four sisters, Marion Farner of Cochrane, Wis., Linda (Dave) Bronk of Dodge, Wis., Bonnie (Kenny) Bartsch of Houston and Lois (Rodger) Matzke of Rollingstone and a sister-in-law Carol Wadewitz of Winona.

He was preceded in death by a sister Adeline Kreckow and two brothers Irvin and Paul Wadewitz.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston with the Revs. David A. Fischer and Michael A. Lindemann officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Audre ‘Aud’ V. Noeske

Audre “Aud” V. Noeske, 80, of Winona died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Sauer Memorial Home in Winona. Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements.

Irene M. Ellringer Tottingham

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Irene M. Ellringer Tottingham, 85, of St. Charles died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

A Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Hoff Funeral Home of St. Charles is assisting the family with arrangements.
