Friends found Harold Barnett and his friend Raymond Carr dead in a north Minneapolis home Thursday. Barnett's 13-year-old son, Terrell, later died at a local hospital.
The family's power had been shut off, and Barnett was using a gas generator to heat the house from which he was being evicted for not paying his rent.
Relatives say Barnett was a hard worker who often fed and helped support others. But a downturn in the construction industry a year ago hurt his home improvement business.
Minnesota law requires carbon-monoxide alarms in all single-family homes.
