Folks gathered Sunday to welcome fall at the Historic Trempealeau Hotel’s Fall Fest.
Good food and music helped ease the pain of knowing the days would be getting shorter and temperatures would be getting chillier. But on Sunday, it was still summer with temperatures in the 80s.
“My very favorite season is fall,” said Marlene James. “The air is fresh. The colors are vibrant.”
James was working at a booth for Citizens First Bank along with Lauren Moen.
“I like all the seasons and all the changes,” said Lauren Moen. “That’s what’s nice about living in Wisconsin. It’s always changing.”
Vendors sold jewelry, tapestries, food and other items as people enjoyed the sunny weather while a train rumbled by in the background.
Sally Reimer was busy selling baked goods from Renaissance Breads & Pastries, a store she owns in Galesville, Wis. She looks forward to fall’s harvest so she can offer fresh apple cinnamon rolls and peach scones.
“Everything is ripening at once,” Reimer said. “I like to do what’s in season.”
She gets her produce from local orchards and sells her items at area co-ops.
Reimer has heard that August is the slow month for bakeries, but that hasn’t been the case for her.
In the summer, she tries to bake early in the morning or later at night to beat the heat. Even so, she says they keep the bakery between 80 and 85 degrees for best baking results.
“When it gets over 90, we turn on the fans,” Reimer said.
Summer may be over according to the calendar but not according to the forecast. Today, Winona is expecting a high of 80 degrees with a high of 81 degrees on Thursday. Temperatures for the rest of the week are predicted to be in the 70s, with the coolest day in the 10-day forecast being Sunday with a high of 64 degrees.
