Minnesota primary election today -- polls open until 8
By Nolan Rosenkrans | Winona Daily News
.
Minnesota voters will get a chance to whittle down the list of candidates running for public office in today’s primary election. Winona city and county voters will choose candidates in the Winona mayoral, Winona County District 3 board and District 4 school board races, and will have a say in the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District. Polls open at 7 a.m. in most precincts, and all are open until 8 p.m.
In Winona’s mayoral race, incumbent Jerry Miller squares off against challengers Haakon Nelson, Clarence Russell and John Skalitzky. Voters will choose two candidates to move on to the general election. The Winona County Board’s District 3 seat will have a new face, as current commissioner Jerry Heim is retiring. The district includes the communities of Stockton, Minnesota City, Rollingstone, Altura, Elba and St. Charles. Steven Herrick, Bernie Siebenaler, Mena Kaehler and Rudie Spitzer — all four from the St. Charles area — will vie for two spots in the general election. Greg Kuehntopp filed to run for the seat, but isn’t actively campaigning for the position. The District 4 Winona school board seat also has a candidate no longer interested in the job. David Kulas announced last week he was dropping out of the race for the seat currently held by Kelly Herold, citing medical concerns. Herold is competing against Greg Fellman and Jean Leicester. District 4 includes Precincts 3 and 4 in Winona’s 4th Ward, and the communities of Dakota, Homer, New Hartford, Richmond, Wilson, Pleasant Hill, Wiscoy, Hart and Warren. The two candidates who receive the highest votes in that primary will move on to the general election Nov. 4. Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District will feature a Republican primary. Brian Davis won the party’s endorsement in the spring, but state Sen. Dick Day decided to bypass the party and go straight to the primary. The winner of today’s primary will battle incumbent Democratic Rep. Tim Walz for the seat that represents southern Minnesota from Wisconsin to South Dakota.
