WSHS grad receives scholarship worth $40K

Karlan Poling, a 2008 graduate of Winona Senior High School, will study this fall on a National Merit Scholarship, guaranteed for four years, at the University of Chicago. Poling also was named a University Scholar and will receive another $10,000 scholarship guaranteed for four years.

At WSHS, Poling was an Advanced Placement Scholar; in the National Honor Society; graduated with highest academic honors; scored a perfect 800 in the math, English literature and writing sections of the SATs; received a Presidential Award for Academic Excellence; was the highest scorer on the Winona Math Team; and was co-captain of the cross country team.

He is the son of John Poling and Cindy Jokela.
