“This was a great opportunity to give our kids some experience,” WSHS coach Tom Sanvik said. “I’m just real happy with the overall effort. It gave us a good opportunity to evaluate our team and put together the final touches for the home stretch.”
In singles, Carly Moran picked up two wins, and Monica Sanvik, Maria Zivkovic and Andrea Jurkovic picked up one win apiece at the invite.
In doubles, the Winhawks only lost once but they did some mixing and matching throughout the invite.
“We keep preaching to our kids that they have to be flexible,” Sanvik said. “Singles, doubles, they have to be ready to play both.”

WSHS 3, La Crosse Aquinas 0
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Just 13 seconds into the game, the Winhawks were on the board. Deni Jerkic stole the ball from an Aquinas player, dribbled though the defense and put it right in the goal. The goal broke the school record for fastest goal, which used to be 23 seconds.
After that, WSHS (6-0) had no trouble with Aquinas, possessing the ball for most of the game.
“(Aquinas) is a very young team,” Winhawks coach Pete Weess said. “We dominated the action. It wasn’t the kind of game that went up and down.”
Jerkic finished with two goals and an assist and Cameron Weess tallied the other goal.
This upcoming week will be big for the Winhawks as they go on the road. On Tuesday, they head to Rochester John Marshall and on Thursday go to Owatonna.
Albert Lea Invitational
ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Cotter split its two games, falling in the opener to Andover 4-1 and handily defeating Stewartville 8-0 in the second game.
Against Andover, the Ramblers went into the half tied after a Brian Lubahn goal, but the second half wasn’t so kind.
“In the first half we played well,” Cotter coach Mike Buum said. “In the second half, we came out flat and struggled defensively.”
Against Stewartville, the Ramblers had no problem. Lubahn had a hat trick, Aaron Theis had two goals and two assists and Alex Lubahn had two goals.
“Overall, we realized we had to work on team defense,” Buum said. “We played well offensively, but defensively we struggled. If we can improve our defense, we can improve a lot as the season goes on.”

Prior Lake Invitational
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. — It was a tough weekend for Winona High as it dropped both games. The Winhawks fell 4-0 to Rochester John Marshall then lost 5-0 to Prior Lake.
“We have to try and improve,” WSHS coach Joan Wickstrom said. “In the second game, we didn’t have many shots but we played a better game. We have a solid keeper but we have to play some better defense and start getting some offense.”
Winhawks goalie Kaity Hamann had nine saves against John Marshall and 13 saves against Prior Lake.
Volleyball
