I firmly believe the answer he has is the correct one: Abortion is immoral.
But there’s more to condemn than abortion. It’s also immoral to do nothing while people around us have no food or health care or jobs, and we opt for war as the way to solve our energy problems. All men and women of goodwill are called by Jesus to works of love, caring and mercy. And the book in which his law of love is set out for us came long before the catechism.
Let’s imagine an abortionless America. Would that make everything good again? Might there still be hunger and sickness and poverty and war? Do you think?
Catholics would do well to read the Gospels as well as the catechism. I think good men and women will find the black and white fade into gray; they’ll find that sure-fire answers solve only small parts of the huge problems we face as informed citizens, voting our consciences.
