LaCross woman pleads not guilty in baby’s death

.
A La Crosse woman pleaded not guilty today to charges that she caused the death of her newborn child and then hid the child’s corpse.

Indra Book, 20, entered the plea after she was bound over to stand trial on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and concealing a corpse.
La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne rejected a defense motion to have the homicide charge thrown out.

Book is accused of letting her infant die by not providing feedings or other proper care after giving birth alone on Aug. 17, 2007, at her former residence at 813 S. Sixth St., according to the criminal complaint.

Moments after Book was charged on June 18, public defender Vincent Rust challenged the homicide charge, contending Book's “omission” of care doesn't constitute the intent required to support first-degree intentional homicide.

La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke argues that Book’s failure to care for her daughter before and after birth supports a first-degree intentional homicide charge in the newborn's death.

Horne said there is enough probable cause to allow the state to proceed with the case.

A status conference will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 7.

" WHERE IS THE FATHER? in this day of DNA "evidence" why are these young women brought to court all by themselves without the "sperm donor" sitting in the hot seat right next to them charged with: "failure to care" and "first degree intentional homicide charge in the newborn's death"? these "sperm donors" should be charged with DOUBLE counts....they have neglected the MOTHER AND the baby and sometimes multiple children. the courts are very negligent in this matter. " I am reasonably certain that by age 20 most people have made the connection between unprotected sex and the emergence of babies.
Was this girl particularly slow or something? Even most girls up to 5 years younger than her have the sense to give some kind of care to a baby. By the way, I don't think most people who do not support abortion believe it's ok to kill the baby after it's born any more than the abortion advocates think it's ok to kill a baby before it's born....wait... " This is unreal...she pleads not guilty. I don't understand and never will. As a woman who can't have children, this makes me so sick. Ever since I was little, the most important thing I wanted to do is become a mom. I won't ever get that chance because I medically can't (had cancer). There are so many loving people like myself who would jump at the chance to adopt but financially, I don't think I can do it by myself. The worst part of dealing with cancer was the fact that I can't have children. I just can't imagine how someone could do that to their child. "

" lydia: I completely agree with you..! for some reason, this case just makes me sick! The worst part is, that many people these days are looking for adoption! I know quite a few couples who can only dream of having children, but cant because of medical conditions, and would give the world to care for a child like this who was put into the world by someone who has no heart! "

" I'm wondering if when this 20 year old got pregnant, she thought to herself "I can't have an abortion; that's murder", but letting the baby die AFTER it's born, is okay. Who cares what happens to them after they're born, but please don't abort them. This scenario, with young mothers giving birth and letting the baby die is not uncommon these days. This sickens me more than all the abortions in the world. "

" LOCK HER UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEYS!!!!...MAYBE A FEW MORE 20 YEAR OLDS CAN TAKE THIS AS A LEARNING LESSON! DONT HAVE CHILDREN IF YOU ARENT ABLE TO CARE FOR THEM! THIS SHOULDNT EVEN BE A CASE!... "
