DARRELL EHRLICK: Tuning into your comments

.
You can call me Al.

All week, I’ve considered entering the federal witness protection program and have begun contemplating a new identity.
Saturday morning the calls started. And they haven’t really stopped.

A week ago today, we made the decision to take out the TV Times book of television listings. We did this for several reasons, including the switch to digital in 2009, the decreased reliability of a printed guide (because television channels change schedules like some change hair color) and because newsprint, like all goods, is rising and we’re not fond of raising subscription prices.

Despite one caller’s assertion that I would do whatever the heck I wanted and continue on fat, dumb and happy, I have heard the complaints — loudly and clearly.

As I told her, fat and dumb — maybe. Happy? Not after this week.

So I have some good news, some bad news and just some plain ol’ news.

First, the bad news: The TV Times weekly book is not coming back.

But before you fire up the speed dial, read on.

The good news is that sometime within the next week or so, we’ll be making some changes to our daily television schedule. For instance, we’ll expand the number of channels, restoring most — if not all — of the channels that we used to carry. Secondly, we’ll adjust the times of the television grids, too. The tentative plan is to have daily listings that start at noon and go through 10:30 p.m. After all, daytime television throughout the week early morning doesn’t change, nor does it change late night.

We think bringing back the channels and expanding the times will hopefully satisfy — or at least ease — some of the sting of discontinuing the TV Times guide.

Finally, the plain ol’ news: I’d love to give you the exact date this will happen. But something as simple as a television list in a newspaper is anything but. We’re working on redesigning the schedule and restoring the other channels. Hopefully, you’ll see the new grids within the next week.

For some, this change will not be enough. For some, nothing short of the bringing the TV Times back will suffice. But for many of you with whom I had the pleasure of speaking, the issue wasn’t so much about changing the format as it was losing much of the schedule’s utility. This should help bring back some of that value.

On behalf of the Daily News staff, we want you to know we listened, we heard you and we’re doing something about it.

Finally, to that woman who suggested this was the stupidest move I’d ever made: Not even close.

Darrell Ehrlick is editor of the Winona Daily News.

" Has anyone else noticed that if you click on the "TV schedule" on the WDN website, you are directed to La Crosse TV listings? "

" Darrell and others at the Daily News, thanks for listening to all the complaints.
I appreciate the bigger version of the tv guide. Would be nice if it was for the next day so people who work can set their recorders the night before. Thanks again. "

" There's this wonderful thing called the internet, that you can go on and search for TV schedules. I wouldn't be suprised if the local cable companies actually have a guide for all of their channels on their website.

Those who don't have the internet, can simply flip through the channels like everyone else. Or better yet, there's this astonishing channel that most cable providers have that's called the "TV Guide Channel", can you believe that it even tells you what's on for the day? AMAZING! "

" Poor some coffee out for your Homie, TV Times, cause it's gone!

Life will never be the same without it :( "

" Hey moosie! Do you miss your TV Times the same way that the mother/father/son/daughter etc. down the block misses their family member who is over in Iraq/Afghanistan? "

" Do people really plan their lives around television? Going through the guide and circling what they might like to watch is pathetic. Maybe going outside and doing something beneficial for yourself and your community would be more rewarding. Get over it people, it's a guide that tells you what is on TV, there are so many other ways you can find out what is on the idiot box!

Typical Winona, Can't Handle Change! "

" There is a weekly publication called "TV Guide" that has 24-7 TV listings. Check it out. "

" Wow, did we ever miss the TV listings!! Our family became disfunctional immediately. Please never, ever consider removing your column from the paper, what would our parakeet Moby have to aim at? "

" I really miss the TV Times. I especially liked having the week at a glance and circling the programs I was interested in watching. If you have to discontinue the Relish and American Profile sections to bring the TV Times back, please consider doing so. The crossword has been downsized to accommodate the daily tv schedule and I would appreciate having that back to full size. "

" I liked having the all day schedule for Saturday and Sunday. Also, I could circle things for the week that I didn't want to miss. The Relish and American Profile sections can be read on the web easier than the TV schedule. My computer isn't near the TV so it isn't easy to check the schedule even tho I have it programed into my homepage. The Chamber section that is published now is one place they could save on paper. When it was mentioned that we would be getting a daily schedule I thought it would be like some of the larger city papers where you got a complete listing of all the channels for the whole day. "

" There is no reason for anyone to be upset. This is just another action by our kind and benevolent government making decisions that effect the lives of each and every American. Congress should try reading the constitution. It give them a clear outline of their jobs and responsibiities as well as the role of the States. "

maconosmom wrote on Sep 6, 2008 10:13 AM:

" That works if you have internet access Donald. I know an elderly woman who complained to the WDN about the TV listings insert disappearing and the snotty customer serice rep told her to look it up on the internet. When this elderly woman told the rep she didn't have a computer the rep told her she should get with the real world and purchase one! By the way WDN, if you're looking to save money, you could get rid of that god-awful Relish insert that is better suited to a much more metropolitan area, and even the American Profile one. That would give you money for the TV insert that so many of your elderly subscribers rely on. "

The Donald wrote on Sep 6, 2008 8:42 AM:

" At the on-line version of TV Guide, I was able to set preferences for HBC's channels. You can probably set it for Charter also. I saved it in the browser's favorites, and it will re-load still showing the local HBC schedule. Of course, it was more convenient having WDN's weekly on the coffee table. One can also find the daily comics on-line should that feature ever be discontinued.

It's getting to be that providing employment for our paper carrier (a friendly and conscientious chap) is one of the few remaining reasons for maintaining our subscription. "
