“Best thing about tonight by far was the defense,” Cotter coach Pat Bowlin said. “We were in their backfield the entire game. They rarely had a first down.”
The defense held K-W to 33 carries for 12 yards Friday. The defense also scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Ryan Eichman recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Cotter focused on its running game behind junior Mike Sullivan, who had 23 carries for 156 yards, including a touchdown.
First-year quarterback Joe Walch threw two touchdowns — one to Joe Conway and another to Bo Beyer — but the junior did have three interceptions.
“Offensively, we were sporadic,” Bowlin said. “We’re still trying to get better at the short and mid-range passing game. Joe is doing a good job on the long ball, but we have to get our short game down.
“He is doing fine. He made some big throws tonight. He’s still learning. He’s only had two varsity games. We just need to get the short stuff down. He definitely throws a good long ball.”
Walch was 9-for-25 for 160 yards.
Steven Tofstad led Cotter with two catches for 57 yards.
The Ramblers (1-1, 1-1) will open their home season Friday against Pine Island.
K-W dropped to 1-1, 1-1.
