We asked three personal shoppers to pick great outfits that incorporate the fall trends but aren’t over-the-top trendy. Their broad view of the market was enlightening, and even if you don’t think you’re a personal shopper type, trust us, it’s liberating to have someone else pull the best of the season and set it up in a nice, private dressing room.
“It’s not like it was years ago, when personal shoppers worked with only select clients,” says Marie Harman, the personal shopper at Lord & Taylor in Garden City, N.Y. “Everybody uses the service: CFOs, lawyers, moms, teachers.”
At Bloomingdale’s, Jackie Mansbach says, “The biggest misconception about personal shopping is that people think there’s a fee. It’s free.”
At Marsh’s in Huntington, N.Y., personal shoppers even make house calls. “We do ... wardrobe edits and even bring clothes over for our clients to try at home,” said Barbara Evans.
But back to fall fashion: See for yourself how personal shoppers lead us to some fabulous wardrobe choices.
Jackie Mansbach, Bloomingdale’s
On fall: “Jewel tones are particularly important — emeralds, reds and most of all purple, which has a rocker chic vibe. Clothes should be versatile.”
Must have: “The siren dress. For day, wear it with a jacket. For night, wear it with a great necklace and booties. You’ll stop traffic.”
Marie Harman, Lord & Taylor
On fall: “I believe in the luxurious comfort of cashmere sweater dressing — belted and layered ... topping wide-leg pants, worn with flats,” says Harman. Important details include interest at the neck (think rich scarves) and handbags in great colors.
Must have: “A black turtleneck to wear with everything.”
Barbara Evans, Marsh’s
On fall: “One of the strongest trends is country chic, rich fabrics and textured tweeds. There’s an emphasis on layered, casual, put-together looks. A dress with a minimalist shape is so versatile and vivid, beautiful jewel-toned colors are key.”
Must have: “The bootie is very important.”
