The University of Chicago put an end to that bid, however.
After the Cardinals opened Day 1 of the Sugarloaf Classic with a 3-1 win over Marian, Chicago got a 3-0 sweep in the second match.
“It was a good run (going 6-0), but maybe a match like (Chicago) will be a good wake-up call for us. We have to be better than we were today, it’s that simple.”
Sarah Gardner had 18 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to lead SMU in the opener, while Emily Welhaven added 11 kills, hitting a team-best .400. Junior setter Brittany Cherwinka had 32 assists and Amy Kujak seven kills and six blocks in the win.
Gardner and Courtney Runge each had 10 kills against Chicago, but as a team, SMU hit just .193 with 39 kills. Cherwinka tallied 31 assists and Lindsey Legett had 25 digs.
