Whitehall, Wis. — Eugene L. Smith, 85, of Whitehall died on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.

Ronald Gene Putz, 73, of Blue Springs, Mo., and formerly of Cochrane, Wis., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Winona.
Burial will be in the Fountain City Public Cemetery.

ARCADIA, Wis. — Adeline Hoff, 88, of Arcadia died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, Arcadia.

Ronald V. Hammond
Ronald V. Hammond, 82, of Winona died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona. Ron was born in Winona on Aug. 23, 1926, to Warren and Madeline “Madge” (Ramczyk) Hammond.
Ron married Grace Stark; they were later divorced. Later, he married Gloria (Fischer) Smith in 1983 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Ron worked for 32 years as the caretaker of the Ward Lucas properties. Following that, he was employed by J.C. Penney until his retirement. Ron is a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre at Pearl Harbor, Okinawa and Sangley Point.
He is a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and a member and past commander of American Legion Post 9, Winona.
It is hard to describe a man like Ron, who had a wide range of interests and a full life. He loved the river and was a true “River Rat,“ enjoying wildlife of all kinds, especially birds and the chipmunks that fequented his woodworking shop. As a handyman and woodworker, he had no equal. He was a man who never said no when someone needed help. Ron will be remembered as a gentle person, good husband, father and grandfather.
Ron is survived by his wife, Gloria; son, Steven (Linda) Hammond of Oak Grove, Minn.; daughter, Debra (Jeff) Lynch of Rocheport, Mo.; and two stepsons, Steven (Judy Machutt) Smith of Winona, and Jeffrey (Colleen) Smith of Wheaton, Ill. Ron is also survived by 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joyce Hammond.
A Mass of Christian burial to celebrate Ron’s life will be on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, with the Rev. Thomas Niehaus officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to time of services at Saint Anne.
Ron’s 10 grandchildren will be honorary casketbearers.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona, where members of American Legion Post 9 will conduct military burial rites.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Alzheimer’s Research or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Margaret E. ‘Maggie’ Michaels
COCHRANE, Wis. — Margaret E. “Maggie” Michaels, 80, of Cochrane died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Lake Winona Manor following a brief battle with cancer.
She was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Pieper Valley, Buffalo County, Wis., an only daughter of the late Norman and Emma (Ebert) Peiper.
She attended and graduated from Cochrane High School with the class of 1945. Following graduation, Margaret attended one year of Normal School and then one year of secretarial school, learning the trade of accounting. She was employed in the accounting department of Big Joe Flour in Wabasha, Minn. She was also a proud part owner of Michaels Raw Fur Co. She was instrumental in the start of “Ye Old School House,“ the ambulance service, now Scenic Valley Ambulance Service, and volunteered her time preparing income taxes for area families. She loved playing cards, dancing and getting together with her friends, especially to Treasure Island in Red Wing, Minn.
She is survived by her four children, Mary Gross of Rochester, Minn., William (Marlene Fernholz) Michaels of Colfax, Diane Peterson of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Brian (Sandy) Michaels of Buffalo City; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; also by many friends.

Lois Ann (Dorn) Nelsestuen
Lois Ann (Dorn) Nelsestuen, 54, beloved wife of Herbert E. Nelsestuen, of 367 E. Wabasha St., Winona, died on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
Lois was born on May 21, 1954, in Arcadia, Wis., to Emil and Marian (Feltes) Dorn. She graduated from Arcadia High School in 1972.
She married Herbert on Dec. 1, 1979, in Winona. She worked for TRW Automotive Electronics for 27 years.
Lois’s hobbies included reading, cooking, baking, gardening and collecting crafts and ceramic birds. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, and she spent weeks decorating their home for the holidays.
She is survived by husband, Herb; father, Emil Dorn; sisters, Mary Dorn, Arcadia, Jane (Jeff) Hofer, Cochrane, Wis., Sandy Dorn, Grand Rapids, Mich., Patricia Dorn, Marshfield, Wis., and Peg Dorn, Reedsburg, Wis.; brothers, Don “Lanky” (Ella) Dorn, Bob Dorn, Joe (Roxane) Dorn, Dan Dorn and Tom (Chris) Dorn, all of Arcadia; father-in-law, Herbert L. Nelsestuen, Winona; brother-in-law, David (Amy) Nelsestuen, La Porte City, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marian; mother-in-law, Linda Nelsestuen; sister-in-law, Sandy (Bautch) Dorn and brother-in-law, Dennis Nelsestuen.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Franko of Central Lutheran Church officiating. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the services on Friday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.
Casketbearers will be brothers Lanky, Bob, Joe, Dan and Tom Dorn; and brother-in-law David Nelsestuen.
