At least seven cars were stolen in the past month, and the thefts are probably related, said Brand, who indicated this many cars haven’t been stolen in Winona “in some time.”
Brand said the stolen vehicles were left unlocked with the keys in them. Vehicles stolen out of Stockton, Wabasha and Lewiston, Minn., have been recovered in Austin, Lewiston and Houston, Minn., respectively. Other cars are still missing.
Some of the recovered vehicles were found near where others were stolen, Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said. Police suspect whoever steals the car drives it across the county to another city, gets out, finds another car to steal and repeats the whole process.
