College roundup: WSU’s Christensen shines in opener

ONALASKA, Wis. — Freshman Eric Christensen opened the Winona State University men’s golf season, and his collegiate career, with a 3-over-par 74 to tie for second Wednesday at the Coulee Region Invitational.

The Warriors (314) finished third at the four-team inviteat the Golf Club at Cedar Creek. Upper Iowa won at 305, Viterbo finished second at 309 and Saint Mary’s fourth at 334.
WSU junior and two-time defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion Brady Strangstalien shot 76 and tied for fifth.

Junior Tony Hynes shot 79 to tie for ninth with SMU’s low round. Cardinals senior Andy Roberts shot 81 and finished 16th.

Women’s golf

Coulee Region Invite

ONALASKA, Wis. — Megan Placko shot the low round for Winona State in its first competition of the season.

Placko, an all-NSIC junior, shot 83 and finished fourth at the par-71 Golf Club at Cedar Creek. WSU sophomore Courtney Sovereign shot 88 for eighth-place, while freshman Michelle Narveson competed as an individual and took sixth with an 86.

The Warriors shot 351 and finished runners-up at the four-team invite, 28 strokes behind Upper Iowa (323). Viterbo finished third (378) and Saint Mary’s fourth (395).

SMU junior Katelyn Rizzi shot 87 and finished seventh. Freshman Gia Puch shot 97 and finished tied for 21st.
