David Kulas, 61, of Wiscoy Township, notified the school district and Winona County Auditor Cherie MacLennan on Tuesday that he no longer wishes to seek the District 4 seat currently held by Kelly Herold. Kulas’ name will still appear on Sept. 9 primary ballots because he missed a July 17 withdrawal deadline.
The ballots were printed 30 days ago, MacLennan said.
Kulas, a retired business owner, said in a voicemail left at the Winona Daily News that chronic back pain and other medical problems caused him to quit.
“If I would get the (the position), I wouldn’t accept it,” he said.
Kulas did not return calls seeking elaboration about his decision and his medical condition.
His departure from the primary leaves Herold to compete with Greg Fellman of Pickwick, and Jean Leicester of Wilson Township in next week’s primary.
District 4 includes the Dakota, Homer, Richmond, Wilson, Pleasant Hill, Wiscoy, Hart, Warren and New Hartford communities. The primary will determine the two candidates who will vie for the seat in the November general election.
