Teach your children well

.
The young of World War II were taught honor and integrity by our gallant soldiers. Conservatism’s hypocritical cries for values cannot expunge the immoral lessons Watergate taught America’s young — Vietnam notwithstanding — and Reagan’s serving up more of the same.

Today’s conservatives jaw values as anti-abortion and anti-gay propaganda, content with America’s (increasingly) brutish society. They spend billions on war and spying but habitually scream “too expensive” on domestic needs, belying their religious and family rhetoric.
If America’s three-decade plus slide ends with Bush, the climb out of the slime will still require self-absorbed conservatives to soften enough to (help us) rescue Congress from its special interest cesspool swim and act out their “values” tune.

Children learn by example. With too many youth acting out (media-promoted) gangbanging, the Internet (Web) has replaced (culturally necessary) unplugged socializing. The Web offers escape from being victimized and assaulted by thuggish anti-social behavior, but the Web also brings America’s growing political corruption to their flickering attention.

Today’s youth has watched Congress approve or sit by while another conservative administration violated the law in ways never before seen in America. Immoral actions define “family values?”

Hardly!

So what do children think? What do you think tomorrow’s America will be like? Can our unemployed youth pay off (Bush’s and abetting conservatives’) staggering debt, quell boorish behavior, repair crumbling infrastructure? Will recalcitrant republicans cease crippling America with their penchant for foreign spending, warfare and immoral example?

An honorary (military) discharge was once an important personal asset. Reinstituting “the draft” offers a cure: Some soldier, others rebuild humbled neighborhoods or teach; all learn responsibility, cooperation, positive social skills, work ethics, shunning dishonesty.

The antidote for the ignorance and violence (and debilitating conservative stubbornness) poisoning our culture is honest, moral public behavior. Walk the talk.
