Then, she spent the entire day at the hospital Friday, diagnosed with mononucleosis.

“I figured I should be making appearances,” said MacGaw, who brought a pillow and blanket to the museum Saturday in case she needed an emergency nap.
Despite her condition, the festival was a hit.
Kids, parents and grandparents enjoyed face painting, chicken dancing, art making and other events complementing the art housed in the museum.
“(My favorite part) is the face painting,” said 3-year-old Mallory Goldstein of West Des Moines, Iowa.
She was visiting her grandma, Valerie Saffel of Winona.
“We just thought it would be good to expose our granddaughter to this culture,” Saffel said.
The festival celebrated the end of summer. It is the museum’s biggest event of the year, and MacGaw’s wish was for the fest to set a tone for upcoming visits from schoolchildren later this year.
“It’s an approach to get people into looking at our art,” she said. “I hope moms will talk to teachers about school groups coming in.”
The name of the festival is derived from Henry Peter Bosse’s blue photograph collection and the blue of the river. Printmaking with a twist — painting a dead fish and putting paper down on the scales — was a hit with the kids, and the concert by Tom Pease got the dads in the crowd dancing.
“(Tom) had them up there doing the funky chicken and the mashed potato,” MacGaw said. “I love when dads come to the museum with their kids.”
