Pool hall plan gets council OK

.
A proposal to open a billiards club and youth center in downtown Winona’s American Legion building is now a step closer to a December grand opening.

The Winona City Council on Monday night granted owner Greg Yahnke a liquor license to operate Tiger’s — a bar, restaurant, pool hall and youth center — in the building the American Legion will vacate this fall when it moves to its new location on Sarnia Street. Council member Tim Breza opposed the plan despite the urging of a Legion spokesman, who said the sale of the building was crucial to Legion plans to finance its new veterans’ center.
Breza said he was concerned about the concept of a bar and youth center in the same building, and said neighbors share his belief that downtown doesn’t need more bars.

Many downtown residents and merchants “don’t want to see downtown Winona revitalized by more liquor licenses,” Breza said. “With the number of young people we have in this community — and they’ll be back in force here in a couple weeks — it doesn’t bode well.”

Yahnke said he understood the concerns, though his brochure said Tiger’s will be “family-friendly” and “safe and relaxing.” The bar, restaurant and billiards club will be in the upstairs portion of the building, and the youth center would be downstairs. Both areas “would be 100-percent supervised at all times,” Yahnke said.

Yahnke, a semi-pro pool player, said his billiards club concept was inspired by a favorite childhood hangout, Le Cue Club, in his hometown of La Crosse, Wis. Yahnke said playing pool there was a healthy way to spend his free time, and he hopes Tiger’s can have a similar impact for Winona’s youth.

The concept “has always been a dream of mine,” Yahnke said. “One of my main goals is to be an asset to the community.”

After the liquor license vote, Mayor Jerry Miller suggested the council revisit a former moratorium on new bars downtown. Breza later said he won’t support any new liquor licenses in Winona unless they’re tied to a “bona fide restaurant.”

" Let me start by saying thank you to those who support my efforts. To those who don't, I would also like to thank you for your feedback. Without pro's and con's to every idea and event or activity we would never be ready for the things that can cause problems. I do feel some of you did kind of miss the point. Some of you get it. this not a bad thing. You don't know me so I can't expect you to just trust me right off the bat. I have always gained my trust the old fashion way, that is "Time will tell." Thanks Again for all your feedback both positive and negetive. "

" Let's be honest, the "youth center" was probably just talk to get into a license and make it seem as if the establishment wasn't going to be just another bar. Make people feel more comfortable with the idea by making it "family acceptable". He just didn't think about people's interpretation or reaction to youth and alcohol topics. However, those people opposed should stop and look around Winona. What is Westgate Bowl or Winona Bowl? Dinner, Bowling, Youth, AND Alcohol.
Good luck Greg. It would be nice to have something new in Winona. "

" The Winona radio article says that they'll be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week. So, I guess now it does sound more like a restaurant. "

" I've never seen wino's at the Marine Art Museum. They have a liquor license because they host wedding receptions and other formal/semi formal gatherings there. It's not a bar.

And if the pool hall was more of a restaurant, and less of a bar it wouldn't sound like a bad idea. But it sounds like a bar.

And a moratorium on liquor licenses would be excellent. In fact, the city should pull some that are out here. I can think of a few bars that should be shut down. "

" It's not as crazy of an idea as the Minnesota Marine Art Museum serving alcoholic beverages. When did they get a Liquor license. Children go there, yes they do. How about a bunch of liquored up wino's spilling the juice on some boat paintings. That liquor license sure pasted unnoticed. Where was Breaza then??? This should not be an issue. "

" There is a place in the twin cities we went to a few times when our kids were younger where you could do the things this man is saying, it wasn't about dropping your kids off and getting wasted it was about having a meal the adults being able to have a beer or a drink with that meal and playing games with the kids and having a good time. If you can't have a drink or two with a meal and show your kids that moderation and control of everything in life is important, its no wonder our kids our out of control! "

" Winona already has a pool club. It's private, but memberships are only $35 a month and you can play whenever you want and as much as you want. Alcohol is also banned there. If you don't know where it is, it is located right across from Westfield Golf Course. Check it out! "

" A youth center should be a place for kids to find postive role models and fun educational activities that teach and promote a responsible lifestyle. This sounds like a place to drop your kid off and get drunk. The children could then interact with all the drunks smoking outside in the parking lot/playground. A bar fine, a youth center great, a bar/youth center bad very very bad. "

" maybe I read this wrong but he loved pool as a youth and hopes that he can have the same impact on youth-it also states the pool club will be upstairs by the bar and the youth center downtstairs. Huh? "

editorintraining wrote on Aug 20, 2008 9:51 AM:

" I live close to there, wouldn't mind a place to shoot pool. But you're right, youth center/bar is a horrible idea. Can't wait to replace the old guys drinking beer at the legion with more drunk kids with pool cues. "
